Très belle lettre concernant la représentation des Beaux-Arts français sur la scène internationale. Il la juge sous-estimée et insuffisamment récompensée. Ainsi il explique pourquoi il a choisi d’exposer à Berlin avec d’autres artistes, sans demander au gouvernement français l’approbation d’une représentation officielle à cette exposition en Allemagne. « Je viens d’apprendre que mon nom a été cité dans votre journal parmi ceux des artistes qui doivent envoyer à la prochaine exposition de Berlin ; j’espère que vous aurez la courtoisie de me permettre de donner à vos lecteurs les raisons qui m’ont fait prendre cette détermination. Depuis la malheureuse année 1871, les artistes allemands ont pris part à nos expositions de Paris annuelles ou universelles, ils y ont reçu de nombreuses récompenses. A l’exposition de 1878, ils ont obtenu un légitime succès. Si à l’exposition de 1889, ils ont été moins largement représentés, cela tient uniquement à ce qu’ils ont du se constituer en groupe privé pour exposer leur gouvernement comme celui de la Russie d’ailleurs, n’ayant pas cru devoir se faire représenter à cette exposition mais le gouvernement français s’est montré très généreux vis-à-vis des artistes allemands qui avaient exposé et leur a donné largement des médailles et des croix de la légion d’honneur. Telle est la situation et tandis que les artistes allemands viennent depuis 20 ans prendre leur part de gloire artistique à nos expositions de Paris, les artistes français n’en récoltent aucune à Berlin. C’est un libre échange où la France donne tout et ne reçoit rien. Nous n’avons pas demandé au gouvernement français de se faire représenter officiellement à la prochaine exposition de Berlin, non, mais nous croyons bon de montrer aux allemands quelques tableaux français. Nos musiciens se font jouer dans toutes leurs salles de concerts, nos auteurs dramatiques remportent de grands succès sur tous leurs théâtres, nos romanciers sont vendus dans toutes leurs librairies, il est juste de leur faire savoir qu’il y a aussi des peintres en France [en leur envoyant quelques tableaux à leurs expositions]… ».

An introduction to the natural history and classification of insects, in a series of familiar letters with illustrative engravings.
1816 x, 192 p, 12 hand-coloured engraved plates, small 8vo, later pebbled cloth with gilt title on spine. A nice little book with attractive hand-coloured plates, written by Priscilla Wakefield. "Priscilla Wakefield, née Priscilla Bell (1751-1832) was an English Quaker educational writer and philanthropist". The subject is treated in a series of letters, a popular form in those days. Rare, especially in an original, hand-coloured state such as this copy. Uncut. With, strangely, the 12 pp. catalogue of Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman, dated August 1822, pasted in front (last two leaves detached). The binding is early- to mid-20th century. One plate re-pasted in, with verso and recto switched. Some spotting throughout, otherwise a good copy. Hagen II, p. 251; Horn-Schenkling, 23024.

1852-1853 Four parts in one. 658 p., 12mo, original cloth, but covers are missing. Small blindstamp on first title page, small stamp on verso. The last part, by Hagen, has a small wormhole hardly touching the text.With an introduction by John Edward Gray. Includes the Neuroptera (in Parts I, II), Isoptera, Ephemeroptera (III), and Odonata (IV). The first part of Hagen's catalogue on Termitina (= Isoptera) (1858), 34 pp, has been added at the end. Contains many new taxa.

A working copy of this rare work.Contains data on type specimens. The work was written by Walker, who is also responsible for the new taxa, and edited by John Edward Gray. This is the start of a series of four parts, and one supplement.
