1857 40 p., original printed wrappers. Deals with Coleoptera only. These species were described when Wallace was still in the Malayan Archipelago contemplating evolution and natural selection. This is part of volume 1, the work should be complete in two volumes with 35 plates, but the second part is about Deyrolle's voyage to Gabon and has nothing to do with Wallace's journey and findings. There should be five plates to this work but this copy contains the text only. Rare. Nissen ZBI, 4120.

First part cut thus a little smaller in size as the four subsequent ones which are uncut. Rare. These five theses were all written by Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) although they have as defenders respectively J. Borgstroem, P.E. Becklin, J. Akerman, C.F. Sebaldt and I. Haij. The first four treat Lepidoptera and the three plates all depict Lepidoptera. The last part treats Coleoptera. In all nine parts were published but all are rare. We offer here the first 5 parts.Thunberg was a botanist and zoologist and is well known as being one of Linnaeus most succesful students. After voyages to South Africa, Sri Lanka, Java and Japan he became a professor in Upsala University.
