Nowadays they are regarded as biological hotspots. The present work contains eight contributions: scorpions (by Kraepelin), Rhyngota (by Distant), ants (by Emery), harvestmen (by Roewer), Dermaptera (by Burr), mammals (by Revilliod) and two smaller entomological contributions. All are well-illustrated and many new species are described and figured. A very good, clean, uncut copy.

Published in the highly esteemed series of zoological contributions edited by Grandidier (father, and later, his son) on the unique fauna and flora of Madagascar. The partly colour-printed (two or three colours) plates are wonderfully executed and have great detail.
1863-1878 Seven parts in seven. ca. 1300 p., 19 lithographed plates, 4to, disbound (no covers). A major achievement by Henri de Saussure on Orthoptera, Phasmatodea and Blattaria. Several groups are revised and many new taxa are described and figured. Because it was printed over a long period of time and several issues of the society's (Société de Physique et d'Histoire Naturelle de Genève) Mémoires, the pagination is irregular, but all the plates are numbered consecutively. En 1864, deux ans après le début d'une campagne militaire au Mexique, Napoléon III ordonna une expédition scientifique sur le modèle de la célèbre expédition scientifique initiée par Napoléon Ier en Égypte, à la suite de la campagne militaire dans ce pays. Henri de De Saussure se consacre à l’étude des hyménoptères et des orthoptères et fait paraître son premier article scientifique sur les guêpes solitaires en 1852. En 1854, il voyage dans les Caraïbes puis au Mexique et aux États-Unis. Il revient en Suisse en 1856 avec des collections d’insectes, de myriapodes, de crustacés, d’oiseaux et de mammifères. Il participe à la fondation, en 1858, de la Société géographique de Genève.
