1919-1922 12 parts in one. About 260 p., 18 plates (2 coloured), later cloth with covers bound in. An important natural history expedition to the Arctic of which the results were published in 16 volumes. This is the complete part on insects (parts A-K; of which J and K appear to be rare), with contributions from several authors, for instance Collembola by Folsom, Neuroptera by Banks, Crane flies by Alexander, Carabidae and Silphidae by Fall, Hemiptera by Van Duzee, spiders by Emerton, Lepidoptera by Gibson (with two full colour plates), Orthoptera by Walker, etc., etc. Many new taxa are introduced here. The work is concluded by a general paper on Arctic insect life by Frits Johansen, and the index. Plates also depict scenery and habitats. Library stamp on front paste-down, some damp-staining to the preliminary papers' top and bottom margins, otherwise a good, clean, complete copy.

The plates are very detailed. A rather nice copy with broad margins. Plates with a faint waterstain in the right corner (only affecting one figure in first two plates), some foxing and soiling in the first 20 and last few pages, otherwise good. Rare. Cat. Library stamps, else very good set.Complete first and only edition of this important work on the behaviour of insects and supposed implications on the nature and behaviour of humans. The Swiss psychiatrist and neuroanatomist Auguste Henri Forel (1848-1931) was very much interested in social instincts and he was the first to describe the phenomena of Parabiosis and Lestobiosis in ants.
