The splendid atlas volume to Jacques Arago’s published account of his voyage to Australia and the Pacific with the Freycinet expedition of 1817-1820.Published in 1822, Arago’s illustrated narrative preceded the official account by two years; and went on to become one of the best-selling voyage books of the nineteenth-century. ‘The text volumes are scarce and the atlas rare’. [Davidson]Arago (1790-1855) was the official artist on Freycinet’s voyage, and is known for the witty and caustic account he later wrote as much as for his fine sketches. Arago was the third of four brothers who excelled in diverse professions, the most notable being his eldest brother François, the scientist and politician. Arago’s undoubted artistic ability attracted the attention of the naval authorities who chose him for the demanding role of draughtsman for the Freycinet expedition. By all accounts a charming, gregarious and eccentric man, these attributes stood him in good stead during the voyage, and are reflected in the sketches he made. The atlas volume is remarkable for its suite of 25 expertly lithographed plates. They include two Australian Aboriginal studies, a landscape in the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney Town, Hawaiian scenes and portraits, native rituals of the Pacific and archaic ruins encountered in the Marianas. les dessins de Jacques Arago, écrivain et dessinateur de l'expédition, reproduits en lithographie dans l'Atlas historique et pittoresque édité en 1822 ,Promenade autour du monde pendant les annees 1817 1818 1819 et 1820 sur les corvettes du roi l'Uranie With a lithographed map of the world and 25 lithographed plates in the atlas, 2 concerning Rio de Janeiro, 5 the Sandwich Islands and 3 Australia. This is the sixth volume in a continuing series of publications listing and identifying all illustrations contained in English manuscripts from the time of Chaucer to Henry VIII. This was an important period in the history of book production in Britain, and the range of subject-matter illustrated is of significance to historians of art, religion, literature, costume, natural science, and social custom. The present volume extends the survey to Wales and catalogues not only English manuscripts in Welsh collections but also Welsh manuscripts, including those held outside Wales. The catalogue contains entries for 128 manuscripts and notes the subject-matter of every illustration in each manuscript, from full-page miniatures and historiated initials to marginalia, added drawings and nota bene signs. A comprehensive index of pictorial subjects provides readers with complete references to the visual material with thematic groupings making the following categories easily accessible: animals, architecture, birds, Christ, containers, costume, furniture, kings, musical instruments, occupations/professions, plants, saints, tools, Virgin Mary, weapons, and women. The volume also inclids a user's guide, an extensive glossary of subjects and terms, including Welsh terms, and indexes of authors/texts and of manuscripts with coats of arms. New book.

Photographic representation of Africa in a Western context - characterised by largely pejorative imagery - has always held a fascination for the artist, Paul Seawright, and "Invisible Cities" was conceived as an attempt to add another, less prescriptive, layer to the pictorial mix. This lavishly illustrated artist's book with a highly distinctive format, draws inspiration from Calvino's book of the same name - which asserts that a city is less defined by its physicality and more by the way its inhabitants move within. Combining portraiture and architectural studies, these large format photographic works made in Lagos, Johannesburg, Lusaka and Addis Ababa, focus on those seemingly interminable prosaic moments, glimpses of the everyday in the hidden recesses of the city. This new monograph, brimming with powerful full bleed pictures gives voice to these burgeoning urban developments and highlights a dramatic, shifting and sometimes troubled landscape barely visible to the developed world. It includes an interview with the artist by Russell Roberts. New!
