‎Rider's edition is the first to be based on representatives of both the Multrum's manuscript traditions since the Bollandists' heavily emended seventeenth-century edition. It offers the first complete and accurate critical apparatus for the text including all the variants of the existing manuscripts and early editions. It also takes into account emendations suggested by scholars since the mid-nineteenth century (Kopke, Pirenne, Thomas and Ross). Readers are thus provided with all the surviving textual evidence and may evaluate for themselves the editor's decisions. Rider's text also indicates, for the first time, the original divisions of the Multrum and reveals Galbert's principles of organization and composition. This volume likewise contains the first edition of the surviving first third of a 15th-century French translation of the Multrum, printed facing the corresponding Latin text. The introduction discusses Galbert, Charles the Good and the historical context, the composition and the textual tradition of the Multrum. The volume includes a bibliography of scholarly works devoted principally to an interpretation or discussion of all or part of the Multrum new maps of early-twelfth-century Bruges and Flanders, genealogies of the count of Flanders (1035-1168) and the Erembalds, and an exhaustive index of names and places and references to nameless representatives of various social groups (like armigeri, ancillae, the clerus Brugensis and milites) which will be of particular use to social historians. ‎This volume revolves around three men who knew each other well, oversaw the political and spiritual life of much of northern France and Flanders during the first third of the twelfth century, and died within five years of one another: Charles the Good, count of Flanders from 1119 to 1127; John of Warneton, archdeacon of Arras from 1096 to 1099 and bishop of Therouanne from 1099 to 1130; and their common biographer, Walter, archdeacon of Therouanne from 1116 to 1132. The volume includes a detailed historical introduction and offers new editions of Walter's vitae of Charles and John and of several other pieces - poems on Charles's death, his epitaphs, the record of the inquest into his murder - that, taken together with Walter's Vita Karoli and the edition of Galbert of Bruges' De multro, traditione, et occisione gloriosi Karoli comitis Flandriarum that has already appeared in this series (ed. J. Rider, CCCM 131, Turnhout, 1994), provide the most important elements of the dossier on Charles's assassination. Each of the works is preceded by an editorial discussion. ‎Composed in about the year 725, the Liber Questionum in Euangeliis (LQE) is a comprehensive reference commentary on Matthew intended for ecclesiastics in the writing, teaching, and preaching professions. Its anonymous Irish redactor gathered together all the relevant patristic and native material available, adding to and adapting much of a still largely unpublished commentary on Matthew by the Hiberno-Latin writer Frigulus (fl. ca. 700). LQE's well-attested manuscript tradition and its far-flung exegetical influence make it one of the more intriguing texts to appear in the Scriptores Celtigenae series. Although LQE's origins are in Ireland (and one Irish fragment still survives), its manuscript families also include witnesses from England and the Continent. Not only is LQE a typical product of the early Irish church, but its considerable length, the variety of its sources, and its influence on later writers further reveal the work to be central to the entire early medieval Gospel commentary tradition. In addition to exegetes in England, the Carolingian writers Haimo of Auxerre (ob. 853), Rhabanus Maurus of Fulda (780-865), and especially Paschasius Radbertus of Corbie (ob. ca. 865) adapted it for their own works on Matthew. ‎In De institutione arithmeticae artis libri duo, Boetius (this, rather than the generally 'Boethius', is how the manuscripts spell his name) shows himself a skillful and stylistically accomplished renderer of the Introduction to Arithmetic by the Neopythagorean Nicomachus of Gerasa. As Boetius explains in the preface of his work, his adaptation follows 'the itinerary, not the footprints', of the Greek original, condensing where possible, and amplifying on the abstruse. For the present edition, about forty manuscripts from the ninth and tenth centuries were examined, and twenty of these were exhaustively collated. The apparatus fontium reflects the indebtedness of Boetian number theory to the Neopythagorean tradition, mainly Nicomachus, Theo of Smyrna and Iamblichus of Chalcis. ‎After Augustine, Pope Leo the Great has been one of the most important witnesses to Manichaeism in the Latin West. This volume first introduces into the world of Leo and his polemics against the Manichaeans in Rome and elsewhere; in this context, the doctrines and practices of Spanish Priscillianism are discussed as well. The central part of the book provides the original Latin texts of Leo, the Constitution of Valentinian III concerning the Manichaeans and a pivotal letter of Turibius of Astorga, all accompanied by an English translation and commentary. The following ten Excursuses deal with central tenets of the Manichaean Christian Gnosis as treated by both Leo and in the original documents of the Manichaeans: Mani the Paraclete; the date of Mani's death; the Bema Festival; the Manichaean fasts, astrology, (apocryphal) literature, dualism, Christology, etc. It not only turns out that Leo provides original information on Manichaeism in the Latin West, but also that Mani's world religion exerted a considerable influence on e.g. the Pope's Christology (and thus on the Catholic Christian dogma). Zu den Zweifeln uber Hussens Autorschaft der Postille Dicta de tempore zahlen der allgemein kompilative Charakter des Werkes, seine stilistische und in der Ausdrucksweise vorkommende Uneinheitlicheit, die die Anwendung von mehreren Quellen mit sich bringt. Die Postille beinhaltet zwei ganze von Johannes Hus verfasste Texte und mehrere Zitaten, Motiven oder Teilen von Auslegungen aus den unstrittig Hus?schen Predigtsammlungen, zeigt jedoch besonders umfangreiche und bei Hus sonst nicht belegte Einstimmigkeiten mit der Postilla studentium seines Vorgangers Konrad von Waldhauser. Der Autor musste ein gebildeter und belesener Mensch sein, wohl jemand, der zum Umkreis von Johannes Hus gehorte und auch dem Universitatsmilieu nahestand.
