Henri Storck, geboren in Brussel op 5 september 1907 en overleden in Ukkel (Brussel) op 17 september 1999, was een Belgische regisseur van vooral documentaires. Hij maakte meer dan zestig films en is onder andere beroemd om kortfilms als Mis re au Borinage. Zijn naam blijft onafscheidelijk verbonden met de Belgische documentaire school, enigszins zoals John Grierson in Groot-Brittanni . Henri Storck realiseerde aanvankelijk avant-gardistische documentaire essays over zijn geboortestad, experimenteerde vervolgens met found footage en maakte een paar militante films. Tijdens de Duitse bezetting bleef hij filmen. Na de bevrijding kreeg hij in Belgi een welhaast offici le status als vader van de Belgische documentaire. Hij inspireerde tal van Belgische cineasten; de gebroeders Dardenne eerden hem daarvoor toen ze in 1999 op het festival van Cannes de Gouden Palm in ontvangst namen voor hun film Rosetta. Henri Storck is ook een van de pioniers van de kunstfilm. In 1944 verfilmde hij al enkele schilderijen van Paul Delvaux, wiens dromerige universum hij op intense wijze wist te evoceren. Als Oostendenaar heeft hij de 'Oostendse schilders' Ensor, Spilliaert en Permeke goed gekend en vaak gefotografeerd en gefilmd. Dit boek wordt uitgegeven in partnership met het Henri Storck Fonds, Mu.ZEE (Oostende) en het Mus e de la Photographie (Charleroi) in het kader van het Ensorjaar.
