‎Summary This is the first full edition of the correspondence of the humanist Johannes Sambucus (1531?1584). Sambucus was a philologist, book collector, doctor, and imperial historian, most famous for his beautiful collection of emblems (the Emblemata), his exceptionally large private library, and his excellent editions of Classical, Byzantine and Renaissance authors, which were printed by the best publishers of Europe. Sambucus hailed from the prosperous and cosmopolitan city of Trnava in western Hungary. After studying at the universities of Vienna, Wittenberg, Ingolstadt, Strasburg, Paris, and Padua, he toured Europe and collected books for many years before settling in Vienna in 1564. By that time, he was a renowned Latin poet and philologist, the author of several books, and a respected friend of many humanists and learned men. Although the first items of his correspondence go back to 1549, it was only after his settlement that the exchange of letters became an essential means of furthering his publishing projects and maintaining his prestigious position in the Republic of Letters. The 377 Latin, German, Hungarian, and Greek letters of the present edition come mostly from archives scattered throughout Europe and from old prints (Sambucus's personal collection of letters has scarcely survived). Thirty-two dedicatory epistles, which appeared in the 14th volume of the series Europa Humanistica in 2014-to which this is a complementary volume-have not been reproduced here. With over a hundred corresponding partners, these letters provide a unique perspective, shedding light not only on Sambucus's philology but also on the wider intellectual culture of Central Europe. ‎Summary Johannes Elith strup (1867-1938), son of a Danish farmer, philologist of Turkish and Semitic languages, and later Vice Chancellor of Copenhagen University, spent 1891-1893 travelling by horse around Syria, Lebanon, and Anatolia. Unlike most European travellers, his language skills allowed him to chat with locals in caf s, stay in people's homes, and travel with the Bedouin. ‎Summary Both in discourse about religions and in the religious discourse of the Greco-Roman Empire, the great figures of mythology and history functioned either as models or as foils, following their use in poetical, philosophical, historiographical, panegyrical or apologetical contexts. The approach's interest lies in the parallel consideration of different sorts of texts, generally examined independently otherwise : Augustan poetry, polytheistic rhetoric and historiography and Christian literature. Indeed, Pagans and Christians had many common concerns, expressed through the conceptual tools they borrowed from each other. Specific case studies reveal underlying connections in the elaboration of the exemplary figures and thus in the beliefs of the Greco-Roman Empire. The contributions show notably how exemplary figures are constructed by the communities depending upon them, the mediating role they play between men and gods, their networking signification, each one being defined by the interactions with the others, their role as rhetorical and polemical devices due to their adaptability, and, in the change of paradigm brought about by Christianity, how pagan figures persist and become a fundamental substratum for new figures, elaborated from these mythical exempla. ‎The Borrowed Gaze/Variations GTB, a series of paintings created by Karin Hanssen, reappropriates the female R ckenfigur (back figure) of the famous work Paternal Admonition (1654) of Gerard ter Borch. Almost identical replications of ter Borch's paradigmatic image of a woman in a satin dress circulated on the market already in the 17th century. Today, in the era of technical reproduction and digital simulation, this practice acquires new relevance. By transferring the image to the here and now, and by producing new variations, the art of Karin Hanssen critically examines concepts of authorship and appropriation. Moreover, her extensive replication also fundamentally alters the status of ter Borch's image. The tension between old and new more specifically creates the background against which the iconic woman from the past truly comes alive, for the first time displaying the complexity of her individual identity.‎

‎Kleurrijke neerslag van de recente beeldenstorm van kunstenaar Fred Bervoets Schilder en graficus Fred Bervoets (1942) kan terugblikken op een carri re van ruim een halve eeuw. Aanvankelijk gold hij vooral als een volbloed schilder, maar in de jaren tachtig verbaasde hij vriend en vijand met grootse etsen die een picturale benadering koppelden aan grafisch meesterschap. De afgelopen maanden werkte Bervoets haast routineus aan zijn etsen op groot formaat, maar 's nachts laat hij zijn verbeelding volledig de vrije loop. Het resultaat van dat zijdelingse teken- en schilderwerk vult ondertussen zowat het hele gelijkvloers van zijn atelierwoning: honderden tekeningen, schetsen, krabbels en schilderijtjes die, afgezien van hun maker, slechts n ding met elkaar gemeen hebben: hun bescheiden A4-formaat. De spontane, automatistische gestualiteit van deze kleine tekeningen vormt het hart van dit boek, waarin ook Bervoets' meer monumentale etswerk sinds 2013 verzameld werd.
