‎En 1927, le secrétaire communal de Huy, René Dubois, passionné d?histoire locale, publiait un «Essai d?iconographie hutoise ou description des vues, plans, portraits et médailles relatifs à la ville de Huy ainsi qu?aux châteaux et maisons religieuses des environs (1574-1900) (Annales du Cercle Hutois des Sciences et Beaux-Arts, t. XXI) », dont le noyau était formé par la splendide collection qu 'il avait patiemment réunie et que l?on peut admirer aujourd?hui au musée communal. Malgré son caractère incomplet et nombre d?imperfections et d?erreurs de détail, cet essai garde encore toute sa valeur. Le présent volume ne prétend le remplacer, ni comme catalogue, ni comme inventaire. La documentation - le lecteur s?en rendra compte en feuilletant les pages qui suivent - est extrêmement abondante et de plus dispersée un peu partout. Le dépouillement exhaustif des principaux centres de documentation européens exigerait à lui seul un temps et des subsides considérables. Aussi cette enquête se place-t-elle sur un plan différent. Plus modeste, puisqu?elle se limite aux peintures, gravures, dessins, cartes et plans dont déjà le nombre est suffisamment élevé. Plus ambitieux pourtant, puisqu?elle s?efforce de dégager une typologie, qui viserait à mettre en évidence, originaux ou inédits, à en déterminer l?auteur, la date et la valeur en les rapprochant d?autres sources, à les regrouper selon les traits communs qu?ils présentent (orientation, raison d?être, technique employée). Bref, elle voudrait faire prévaloir un ordre, tout provisoire, dans une matière où a régné jusqu?à présent une confusion assez regrettable, comme l?ont montré les controverses à propos de la «Nativité» du Maître de Flémalle. En s?appuyant sur l?apport de l?illustration, on a tenté, par la même occasion, de réaliser une sorte d?atlas urbain qui permettrait aux historiens de saisir la ville dans sa réalité figurée, en vue d?une étude plus approfondie de sa topographie entre le XVe et le XIXe siècles. Le cadre dans lequel s?est déroulée l?histoire hutoise n?est pas immuable: ce n?est pas d?aujourd?hui que les hommes et les événements s?ingénient à le transformer, c?est-à-dire à l?améliorer ou à le détruire. Aussi l?image que l?on se fait de la ville varie-t-elle dans l?esprit des générations: la documentation répercute assez fidèlement ces changements dans la mentalité. A Huy, par exemple, sens du pittoresque (lié au début à certains aspects religieux), préoccupations descriptives, nécessités militaires ou fiscales se succèdent, se confondent et se complètent tour à tour. Il était donc naturel de faire une place, aux côtés d?artistes réputés comme R. Campin ou J.M.W. Turner et des auteurs de gravures et de dessins, aux ingénieurs militaires du XVIIe siècle et aux géomètres des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Chacun à sa façon et selon ses moyens, ouvre sur le phénomène urbain une perspective originale et souvent féconde, que l?on s?est efforcé de replacer dans son contexte historique, l?éclairant par des extraits d?écrivains et de voyageurs contemporains. Une illustration abondante procure à cet essai une dimension supplémentaire. Elle a été choisie en fonction de deux critères. Originalité d?une part: il a paru préférable de reproduire les documents moins connus, inédits ou controversés plutôt que les vues traditionnelles largement répandues. Utilité, de l?autre: les reproductions «curieuses» ont été écartées au profit de celles qui serviront directement à l?étude de la topographie urbaine. Non sans que les nécessités de l?exposé ou la documentation disponible n?entraînent, ici et là, d?indispensables acco-modements. Au demeurant, l?essentiel était de lier histoire urbaine et iconographie. L?amour du passé, s?il n?est qu?amour de vieux textes, ne nous semble ni complet, ni fécond.‎

‎Voor het eerst integraal vertaald in het Nederlands Maurice Maeterlinck begon zijn literaire carrière als dichter. Zijn eerste volwaardige publicatie was een reeks van drieëndertig gedichten, die meteen de wereld van de letteren verbaasde. Niet lang daarna volgde een tweede bundel, met symbolistische poëzie pur sang waarin angst en noodlot de hoofdrolspelers vormden. Het is merkwaardig dat Maeterlinck, van wie de poëzie ongemeen creatief en vernieuwend bleek, zijn latere gedichten niet meer gebundeld heeft. Dat zou de Leuvense hoogleraar Joseph Hanse in 1965 in zijn plaats doen. Met alles samen zeventig gedichten beslaat Maeterlincks poëzie slechts een klein deel van zijn immense oeuvre, maar ze is wel van uitzonderlijk belang. De kwalificatie 'meesterwerk' is dan ook eerder regel dan uitzondering. Deze verzamelde gedichten overspannen de hele schrijverscarrière van de Gentse Nobelprijswinnaar en laten ons zien hoe veelzijdig Maeterlincks talent was en hoe versatiel zijn verbeelding.‎

‎Peintre et graveur, Hieronymus Cock (Anvers 1518-1570) fut un des premiers artistes du nord de l'Europe a creer, avec son epouse Volcxken Diericx, une maison d'edition d'estampes. Des 1548, 'Aux Quatre Vents' publia des centaines d'eaux-fortes et de gravures. Inspirees des fresques et des tableaux de Raphael et de Bronzino, des ruines classiques et des sculptures antiques, mais aussi des dessins d'artistes septentrionaux comme Maarten van Heemskerck et Frans Floris, elles furent diffusees dans toute l'Europe, ou elles contribucrent a repandre les ideaux de beaute de la Renaissance. Ayant discerne le talent de Pieter Bruegel, Cock lui commanda une soixantaine de planches. De sa propre initiative, il realisa egalement des gravures a partir des compositions monumentales et debordantes d'imagination de Jerome Bosch. Dans ce livre, qui va de pair avec une exposition organisee a Louvain et Paris, les activites de Cock et de son epouse ont ete minutieusement reconstituees et analysees. Les auteurs veulent rendre justice a l'esprit d'entreprise des protagonistes, tout en sensibilisant le lecteur au role capital joue par l'editeur d'estampes dans l'histoire de l'art. ‎

‎Pieter Bruegel de Oude (1525/30-1569) is een van de beroemdste schilders van de Nederlanden. De expo vindt plaats van 15 oktober 2019 tot en met 16 februari 2020 in het Paleis van Karel van Lotharingen in Brussel, dat voor deze gelegenheid opnieuw zijn deuren opent na een lange renovatie. Rond het midden van de zestiende eeuw werd Vlaanderen het internationale productie- en handelscentrum voor grafiek. Samen met zijn uitgever, Hieronymus Cock, speelde Bruegel een sleutelrol in deze bloeiperiode. De tentoonstelling focust op het unieke vakmanschap en de ondernemerskwaliteiten van beide heren en toont aan de hand van verschillende staten en edities het lange maakproces dat grafisch werk ondergaat, van ontwerptekening tot afgewerkte prent.
