‎Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930) werd tijdens zijn leven geconfronteerd met diverse kunststromingen. Tijdens zijn studie aan de Antwerpse academie werd het onderricht er volledig gecontroleerd door de epigonen van Henri Leys. Vernieuwers volgens het impressionisme of pointillisme werd het leven moeilijk gemaakt en zij verlieten de metropool om zich in Brussel te vestigen. De oprichting van Kunst van Heden in 1905 betekende een keerpunt in het Antwerpse artistieke leven, dat langzaam maar zeker opnieuw internationale aansluiting vond. De Eerste Wereldoorlog maakte een abrupt einde aan de stijgende belangstelling naar zijn oeuvre. Zijn oorlogstekeningen werden in 1919 vergeleken met die van Kollwitz, Forain en Steinlen. Na de Groote Oorlog kreeg ook in ons land het expressionisme meer aandacht. Kunst van Heden wijdde haar salon van 1926 volledig aan de moderne Franse kunst. Van Mieghem bestudeerde er belangrijke werken van o.a. Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Modigliani, Zadkine en Rouault, een confrontatie die een bijzondere invloed op hem uitoefende. De intimistische en religieuze onderwerpen, naast prachtige bloemstukken en stillevens die de kunstenaar onder invloed van de art deco in de beslotenheid van Sint-Paulusstraat 30 maakte, zou hij echter nooit exposeren. Dit boek geeft een uniek overzicht van zijn artistieke zoektocht in die boeiende periode van zijn leven.‎

‎In 1872 reisde Clement Griscom, een jonge ondernemer uit Philadelphia, naar Antwerpen om er de Belgische vennootschap Société Anonyme deNavigation Belge-Américaine (kortweg sanba ) op te richten. Tijdens een periode van ongeveer 60 jaar, tussen 1873 en 1934, vervoerde de rederij onder de merknaam Red Star Line om en bij twee miljoen emigranten naar de Nieuwe Wereld. Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930) was een belang rijke getuige niet alleen van die massale volksverhuizing, maar tegelijk van zijn tijd en omgeving, de wereldhaven waarin hij opgroeide en leefde. Zijn uitzonderlijke tekeningen, pastels en schilderijen van gelukzoekers kregen pas 50 jaar na zijn dood opnieuw enige aandacht. Door talrijke publicaties en exposities in de Verenigde Staten en Europa werd Van Mieghem een Antwerps icoon en een internationaal bekende vertolker van de Europese migratie tijdens het begin van de 20ste eeuw. De kunstenaar leefde in een maatschappelijk erg bewogen periode van ontluikende democratie. Gedragen door medeleven en idealisme wou hij de artistieke getuige zijn van een bevolkingsgroep die haast nooit in beeld kwam. De wereld trok immers letterlijk aan zijn deur voorbij en die naamlozen gaf hij een gezicht. Zijn virtuoze talent en zijn beklijvende authenticiteit hebben ertoe geleid dat Van Mieghem als kunstenaar met zijn oeuvre een ereplaats in de Europese kunst inneemt.‎

‎In zijn sociale belangstelling werd de Eugène Van Mieghem bijzonder geboeid door de duizenden landverhuizers die hun land van oorsprong (vooral Polen en Rusland) voor de pogroms ontvluchtten om hun geluk te gaan zoeken in de Nieuwe Wereld. In 1901 kende Van Mieghem heel wat succes op de Brusselse salon van "La Libre Esthétique" waar zijn achttal pastels en tekeningen hingen naast werk van Franse impressionisten als o.a. Monet, Cézanne, Pissarro, Renoir en Vuillard. Op 28 januari 1902 huwde hij met zijn verloofde Augustine Pautre, een Brussels meisje dat lessen volgde aan de Antwerpse Academie.‎

‎This volume refers to medium-sized panels and fragments of stained-glass windows from the Middle Ages up to the end of the 18th century, found in public buildings, churches, museums and private collections in the present five provinces of Flanders (Belgium). The present volume contains the panels and fragments encountered and researched by the authors since they started their research more than thirty years ago. Many of these panels and fragments are totally unknown to the public as they have never been displayed, nor published. Nevertheless they demonstrate an important aspect of stained-glass production and stained-glass conservation. Where large windows in churches are well known to the public, it is often forgotten that even more stained glass was created for dwellings of the noble or patricians, house chapels, guild rooms, smaller spaces in abbeys, etc. It also became clear that virtually no glass was thrown away and larger fragments and panes were recycled as ?stop gaps? or integrated in composite panels, the so called ?vitraux d?antiquaires?. Furthermore archaeological sites nearly always reveal quite small pieces of glass, which could not be used for repairs or as ?cullet? in the glass production cycle.
