Summary Who was not born, was buried in his mother's womb, and was baptized after death? Who first spoke with a dog? Why don't stones bear fruit? Who first said the word 'God'? Why is the sea salty? Who built the first monastery? Who was the first doctor? How many species of fish are there? What is the heaviest thing to bear on earth? What creatures are sometimes male and sometimes female? The Old English dialogues The Prose Solomon and Saturn and Adrian and Ritheus, critically edited in 1982 by J. E. Cross and Thomas D. Hill, provide the answers to a trove of curious medieval 'wisdom questions' such as these, drawing on a remarkable range of biblical, apocryphal, patristic, and encyclopaedic lore. This volume (which reprints the texts and translations of the two dialogues from Cross and Hill's edition) both updates and massively supplements the commentary by Cross and Hill, contributing extensive new sources and analogues (many from unpublished medieval Latin question-and-answer texts) and comprehensively reviews the secondary scholarship on the ancient and medieval texts and traditions that inform these Old English sapiential dialogues. It also provides an extended survey of the late antique and early medieval genres of 'curiosity' and 'wisdom' dialogues and florilegia, including their dissemination and influence as well as their social and educational functions. "Eames: Beautiful Details" celebrates the seamlessness and fluidity in which Charles and Ray Eames operated as both a husband-and-wife team and as designers unrestricted by traditionally profesionally boundaries. Select details of their life and work, from their refined designs to to their innovative experiments, and even including images depicting the everyday poetic moments of their lives, and are shared here in this exhibit within a book. Inspired by Charles's immersive and original slideshows, in which he expertly selected and grouped images together that communicated information in an aesthetic, direct, and accessible way, this book strives to visually created the Eameses' life and work by taking the viewer through a delightful joruney, focusing on their "beautiful details." The packaging design of the "Eames: Beautiful Details" slipcase is a pattern inspired by the triangles and colors of one of their most inventive, if lesser-known, designs for children, simply called, "the toy." It also pays homage to the patterns they used on their well-loved House of Cards. The Eameses brought a sense of humor and joy to everything they created, and the design and layout of the book aims to convey that spirit in a visual feast for the eyes. It is a testament to the Eameses and the lasting value of good design that their Eames lounge chair, created in 1956, endures today as perhaps the most recognizable and coveted piece of mid-century furniture design. Their experiments in technological innovations, like molded plywood and fiberglass, resulted in such classic pieces as the bent plywood LCW and DCM Chairs, the Molded Plastic Chairs, and the Aluminum Group; all of which are still in production by Herman Miller. Likewise, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in 1949 in Pacific Palisades, and it is still revered as a landmark of modern architecture. Built as part of the Case Study program in California, sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine, it was one of the earliest experiments in pre-fab construction, using off-the-shelf industrial parts. But unlike the austerity of much of modern architectural design, their factory-like shell was lovingly lived in along with their personal collections of folk art, treasures from their travels, and everyday objects refreshingly displayed with affection and without pretense.

The essential exploration of the design, history, and culture of the motorcycle - an icon of the machine age. Motorcycles are ubiquitous in the world's streets and cities, evolving over decades in engineering and design to meet individual transportation needs. With the coming demise of the internal combustion engine and the rise of electric-powered vehicles, motorcycle design is being revolutionized by new technologies, the demands of climate change, and global social transformation. The book showcases 100 superb examples of motorcycle design from the late 19th century to the present and then on beyond to the technological innovations of the future. The essays and texts accompanying each image have been written by internationally renowned motorcycle experts, Professor Charles M. Falco and Ultan Guilfoyle, who reveal the motorcycle's influence on realms as diverse as film, fashion, sport, advertising, and technology. Beautifully illustrated with specially commissioned photography and archival ephemera, the engaging text will prove compulsive reading for design lovers and motorcycle fans alike. A must-have companion, The Motorcycle, Design, Art, Desire traces the exciting evolution of this automotive icon - and the culture of desire, freedom, and rebellion that surrounds it.

A spellbinding journey into the world of Chanel haute couture, captured by one of fashion's most acclaimed photographers. In exclusive shoots with the house of Chanel, photographer Cathleen Naundorf gained rare access to their haute couture collections--which entail thousands of hours of handwork, crafting, and embellishing. The result: a book of ethereal, cinematic photographs of gowns against theatrical backdrops that capture the ensembles' exquisiteness and the magical allure of haute couture. This is what sartorial dreams are made of. For more than two decades, Naundorf has used her expert photographic skills to pay homage to the haute couture aesthetic. Combining her experiences in travel, art, and photojournalism, Naundorf elaborately arranges each detail of her images using storyboards and extensively researches the lighting for every image. Captured with analogue large-format cameras, each photograph is a singular vision suggesting romance, surrealism, exoticism, and above all else, fantasy.

Handsomely designed and richly illustrated, this publication surveys the magnificent spectrum of projects undertaken by French architect and interior designer Charles Percier (1764-1838). After gaining an illustrious reputation for supervising the scenery at the Paris Opera during the French Revolution, Percier was later appointed by Napoleon Bonaparte. With the Emperor's support, he developed the opulent versions of neoclassicism closely associated with the Napoleonic era, and now known as Directoire style and Empire style. Percier worked on the renovation or redecoration of many of France's royal palaces, including the Louvre, the Tuileries, and the chateaux of Malmaison, Saint-Cloud, and Fontainebleau. The full scope and variety of Percier's design projects are revealed in this book, which also includes archival material detailing Percier's relationships with patrons and peers.

Frank Sinatra was an entertainer of mesmerizing talent, charisma and style. As well as being one of the bestselling musical artists of all time, he was an Academy Award-winning actor who starred in over sixty movies, and a cultural icon of seismic influence. Created in close collaboration with the Sinatra family and Frank Sinatra Enterprises, this momentous book captures the man in public and private, with exclusive unseen photographs and memorabilia from the family archives, as well as the most iconic images, outtakes and contact sheets from celebrated photo shoots. In candid accounts from his closest friends and associates, a portrait emerges of a man who was intensely loyal to his friends, enthusiastically devoted to charity and who demonstrated exceptional stamina and resilience in a career that spanned an incredible six decades. The result is a captivating tribute to one of the best-loved performers the world has ever known, in a large-format presentation every bit as swanky and swoonsome as the man himself.
