‎Jan Lievens (1607-1674), Rembrandt's boyhood friend, who embarked on an artistic career even earlier than his companion, once again is as highly regarded as during his lifetime, thanks to numerous recent publications and several exhibitions. The present monograph and catalogue raisonn discuss and analyze for the first time the extensive output of his early Leiden years: his paintings, drawings, and etchings from 1623 to 1632. Besides the book?s comprehensiveness and consideration of the artist's work in the context of his Netherlandish contemporaries from Haarlem, Utrecht, and Antwerp, special emphasis is placed on establishing the chronology of his ?uvre. Only a solid foundation such as this would make it possible to determine more precisely than before Lievens?s much discussed relationship to Rembrandt. What transpired was a most lively give and take between two young artists intensely searching for new ways of artistic expression whose later development after their respective move from Leiden took very different paths. ‎Summary This volume offers the first modern edition and study of the liturgical writings of Bern, abbot of Reichenau (d. 1048). Dealing with some of the more ordinary questions facing medieval worshipping communities - such as how to find the correct date for Advent Sunday, or how to be sure that a text is liturgically or doctrinally appropriate - Bern's four tractates provide rare first-hand insights into the practices, problems and perceptions of Christian liturgy in the early years of the second millennium. Formerly attributed to Bern, a fifth work (Ratio generalis de initio Aduentus) is shown to be one of his sources and is edited in an appendix. Unlike formal liturgical expositions, Bern's writings were devoted to alleviating specific concerns, often at the request of specific people. However, the author also believed strongly in the potential of his reasoning to draw together the Christian community at large. As such, these writings are assiduously argued and researched, reaching their conclusions with the author's characteristically broad weave of citation, interpretation and anecdote. With implications liturgical, intellectual and political, the tractates are fertile sources not only for scholars of religion, but also for musicologists and medieval historians. ‎Een vergeten hoofdstuk uit de Belgische oorlogsgeschiedenis. Meesterwerken zoals Hans Memlings wereldberoemde Schrijn van de Heilige Ursula en een paar van zijn triptieken werden er bewaard, naast schilderijen van o.a. Jan Van Eyck, Hugo Van der Goes, Jeroen Bosch, Peter Paul Rubens en Rembrandt. Ook tienduizenden kostbare documenten, boeken en manuscripten uit Brugse en Antwerpse musea en archieven vonden er een nieuwe thuis. Tussen juli 1942 en augustus 1944 werd het kasteel van Lavaux-Sainte-Anne op last van de Duitse bezetter ingericht als een van de best uitgeruste archief- en kunstdepots van het land. Dat deze erfgoedschat de oorlog zonder al te grote schade overleefde, danken we aan een groep gewetensvolle ambtenaren onder leiding van Herman Bouchery, een jonge Vlaamse kamergeleerde. Zij ontpopten zich als de zorgzame kasteelheren van Lavaux-Sainte-Anne.‎
