‎Deuxième édition augmentée d'une Notice sur la vie des poètes et des musiciens. Cet exemplaire présente la particularité de comporter un supplément ajouté en 1743 à l'édition de 1732 : de cette façon, la page 660 devrait constituer la fin de l'ouvrage ; on peut en effet y lire : « Fin de l'Ordre Chronologique des Poëtes & des Musiciens rassemblez sur le Parnasse François jusqu'en cette année 1732 » ; mais, la page suivante, non comprise dans la pagination, est composée d'un faux-titre portant : « Suite du Parnasse François, jusqu'en 1743. Et de quelques autres Pièces qui ont rapport à ce Monument » ; les pp. 661 à 832 constituent alors un supplément pour les années 1733-1743. Il semblerait que ce supplément se vendait chez la veuve Pissot et chez Chaubert. Les dernières pages de l'ouvrage présentent 3 lettres à l'auteur, la première de Rousseau, la deuxième de Thémiseul de Saint-Hyacinthe, la troisième, en vers latins, du P. Vanière, ainsi que des notices sur les acteurs et actrices célèbres de la Comédie et de l'Opéra ; l'édition antérieure présentait l'ouvrage selon un ordre alphabétique, alors que la présente édition le dévoile sous un ordre chronologique.Évrard Titon du Tillet (1677-1762) est connu pour avoir élaboré ce projet de construction d'un monument représentant le mont Parnasse qu'il voulait élever à la gloire du règne de Louis XIV. La somme trop onéreuse que cela aurait dû nécessiter est la cause de l'abandon de ce projet. Néanmoins, le modèle fut exécuté en bronze par Louis Garnier. On voit au sommet du Parnasse, Louis XIV en Apollon pourvu d'une lyre ; au-dessous, les Trois Grâces sont figurées par Mmes de La Suze, des Houlières et de Scudéry ; autour du mont, à la place des Neuf Muses : Corneille, Molière, Racan, Segrais, La Fontaine, Chapelle, Racine, Boileau et Lully tenant le médaillon de Quinault ; des médaillons représentent les hommes moins célèbres.Le présent ouvrage apporte alors une description détaillée de ce monument, dont la première édition (in-12) parut en 1727 sous le titre de Description du Parnasse français exécuté en bronze, suivie d'une liste alphabétique des poëtes et des musiciens rassemblés sur ce monument. ‎Pieter Bruegel the Elder is best known for his peasant and winter scenes, archetypal images of the Low Countries, but his masterpieces always manage to transcend the local. A defining element in his hybrid landscapes are the Alpine rock formations he observed on his way to or return from Italy. Bruegel travelled to the peninsula around 1552, and his sojourn lasted about two years. Though remarkably little of his artistic production in Italy has been preserved, later compositions demonstrate that Bruegel must have journeyed to Rome, and then as far as Naples and Messina. The purpose of this book is to reassess Bruegel?s encounter with Italy within a broad cultural-historical context and in light of recent scholarship. Communication between Italy and the Low Countries was intense during Bruegel?s time, as were artistic, political, and economic relations. While Italo-Netherlandish ties interconnected Bruegel?s world on multiple levels, Bruegel?s relationship with Italy has mostly been viewed from the perspective of his individual travels. Though Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) collaborated only rarely, when furniture producer Dino Gavina asked him to design a series of furnishings, Scarpa brought in the young, brilliant architect Sandro Bagnoli to help him complete the projects. ‎Based on the excavations of 1965-1980, this second volume in the series provides an overview of the medieval art and architecture that was found below the Florence Duomo and Baptistery Archaeological Campaigns below the Florence Duomo and Baptistery, 1895-1980 presents the results of one of the major archaeological campaigns of our times: the decade-long excavation below Florence's cathedral of S. Maria del Fiore. The book presents a cutaway vision of a great city that would be hard to match anywhere, exploring a site that was in use for 1500 years, from the founding of the Roman settlement of Florence to the burial there of Giotto and Brunelleschi. In terms of structures, the excavation uncovered a Roman house, an Early Christian basilica, a Carolingian crypt, and further rebuildings from the eleventh century and later. For artifacts, the findings constitute a virtual encyclopedia of ancient and medieval art in mosaics, frescoes, the grave of Florence's earliest documented saint, the first elaborate tomb of the Medici, and outstanding examples of Roman and medieval glass, metalwork, and ceramics. Forty-one specialists in material culture and archaeological science report on those finds in the book, and hundreds more illustrations are carried on the author's website, www.franklintoker.com. But the findings from below the Florence Duomo are not limited to art history.
