‎Renaissance betekent wedergeboorte. Deze stijlperiode uit de 16de eeuw was ontstaan in Italie, waar reeds in de 15de eeuw een grote heropleving van de belangstelling voor kunst en architectuur uit de oudheid ontstond. Deze belangstelling bleef niet zonder gevolgen voor de eigentijdse kunst. Zowel thema's en motieven als specifieke uitdrukkingswijzen waren gebaseerd op de kunst der antieken. Ook de onderliggende filosofie over mens en wereld werd met grote interesse bestudeerd. Dat de mens meer centraal komt te staan is een fenomeen dat met name in de architectuur een grote weerklank vindt. In tegenstelling tot de bijna letterlijk 'hemeltergend' hoge gebouwen van de gotiek, worden hier gebouwen gerealiseerd op mensenmaat, d.w.z. waarbij de menselijke proporties de maatstaf voor de constructie worden. Hoewel in wezen een Italiaanse aangelegenheid, kwam de rest van Europa ook onder de invloed van deze revival van de oudheid. Onze renaissance-architectuur staat op haar beurt voor bijzonder interessante en uitzonderlijk mooie gebouwen die de impact van het Italiaanse renaissance-idioom op een heel persoonlijke, een heel streekgebonden manier verwerkt. De 17de eeuw voert van de renaissance naar de barok. Zeer vergelijkbaar met de renaissance-architectuur is de structuur-op-mensenmaat. Het grote verschil met de 16de eeuw zit evenwel in de exuberante ornamentiek die een veel meer dominerende rol gaat spelen en die de architectuur een allure verleent die men in de geschiedenis van de architectuur nooit eerder heeft gekend. ‎
