‎Torens behoren vanouds tot de belangrijkste bakens in het Nederlandse landschap. Zij golden als het waarmerk van steden en dorpen, waarvan zij het silhouet domineerden en vormden een onmisbaar onderdeel van romaanse en gotische kerken, later ook van stadhuizen. In dat opzicht is hun grootschalige voorkomen een erfenis van de middeleeuwen: in de klassieke oudheid speelden torens een veel minder grote rol. Bij Romeinse tempels kwamen zij bijvoorbeeld niet voor. Dat gegeven werd van belang toen, vanaf de renaissance, architecten gingen teruggrijpen op de principes van de antieke wereld. Het conflict tussen een gotische traditie, die een toren verlangde, en een klassieke leer die deze als in strijd met de meest fundamentele eigen principes moest afwijzen, vormt de rode draad in Toren versus traditie. Hoe gingen classicistische architecten op het grondgebied van het huidige Nederland in de zestiende, zeventiende en achttiende eeuw met dit probleem om? Claims of authority, efforts to have that authority recognized, and the struggle to transform it into more tangible forms of power were defining factors of the medieval Church's existence. As the studies assembled here demonstrate, claims to authority by members of the Church were often in inverse proportion to their actual power - a problematic paradox which resulted from the uneven and uncertain acceptance of ecclesiastical authority by lay powers and, indeed, fellow members of the ecclesia. The chapters of this book reveal how clerical claims to authority and power were frequently debated, refined, opposed, and resisted in their expression and implementation. Baltz was instrumental in conceptual photography taking its place as an equal among other media in the context of art. His groundbreaking serial works of the late 1960s and '70s describe places which were created as epiphenomena of a post-industrial society. LeWitt helped shape the understanding of contemporary art as a pioneer of conceptual art since the 1960s. His open cube structures of Serial Project (1967) and massive Black Cubes (2000) with their oversized forms point to an absence of function while the objects assert their presence in space.‎
