This book is designed to provide a guide for art historians, conservators and manuscript scholars to understand and support the increasingly popular cross-disciplinary research efforts focused on non-invasive scientific analyses of illuminated manuscripts. The results achieved by the research of the pioneering MINIARE research project based at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge led to the ground-breaking and acclaimed 2016 exhibition "COLOUR: The Art and Science of Illuminated Manuscripts." This was followed by an international Conference, in which art historians, paper and book conservators, and cultural heritage scientists were brought together to share new recent research not only on manuscripts but also on painting in other media. The Conference proceedings were published in the first two volumes of the HMMIMA series (2017-2018). The present publication includes 6 Essays by way of introducing and explaining the major topics being investigated, including the range of inks, pigments and paint binders used by illuminators; parchment-making; pigment recipes; and model books. The many analytical instruments and techniques that are used to investigate manuscripts are also discussed. Then follow 58 Case Studies of manuscripts from as early as the year 700 up to c.1600. All these are fully illustrated in colour and in great detail, and should act as examples to inform scholars in libraries, museums and other cultural institutions of the benefits of adding scientific tools to the range of methods used to investigate manuscripts.

Summary Opening Manuscripts, inspired by Elly Miller's passion for manuscripts and her commitment to their study, shines a light on the many ways in which medieval manuscripts can be understood. From the physical unfolding of the parchment to discussions of iconography, dating and influences, over time and across countries, each of the volume's nineteen richly illustrated essays by distinguished scholars in the field asks us to explore a different aspect of the illuminated manuscript. It is a splendid tribute to Elly Miller (1928-2020), the driving force behind Harvey Miller Publishers, who championed medieval art for over half a century. From 1970 to the end of her life, her role as publisher, not only commissioning but also personally editing and designing, was fundamental to the development of the scholarly study and wider appreciation of handwritten and illustrated books of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.? It was not before the 1990s that Louise Bourgeois won global recognition for her artistic achievements, becoming famous for her monumental spider sculptures and room-sized cells. But it was in her early oil paintings that the artist first developed the formal vocabulary and defined the thematic concerns that she would continue to explore. This catalogue accompanies the first major solo exhibition of Bourgeois' early paintings in Europe, placing them in dialogue with a selection of later sculptures, installations, drawings and prints.

As productive and versatile an architect as Stephane Beel is, architectural criticism and reception of his work are never far behind. New works are followed immediately by new words. Born in Kortrijk, Belgium, in 1955, Beel is one of the most prominent figures on the blossoming European architecture scene. His work has featured in numerous international magazines, including in El Croquis. This book presents a selection of eighteen of his projects in unprecedented detail. Every work is lavishly illustrated and discussed in a critical essay. The book opens with an extensive conversation between Stephane Beel and the editors, Mil De Kooning and Christophe Van Gerrewey, both of whom are affiliated with the Department of Architecture & Urban Planning at Ghent University. The interview is entitled 'An Intense Order', which at once reflects the structure and the concept of this book: without putting forward a single, all-embracing interpretative system, it systematically offers a variety of opportunities for capturing the spark that invariably lights up the work of Stephane Beel Architects.

Summary Sympozjum Egejskie: Papers in Aegean Archaeology is a peer-reviewed sub-series of Warsaw Studies in Archaeology. It has been designed to fulfil the role of a platform for presenting and introducing a wide range of new research approaches and themes within the broad area of Aegean Archaeology. This is primarily achieved through showcasing the work of newcomers to the discipline, in other words those scholars who are currently at the beginning of their research career in the field of Aegean Archaeology, as well as scholars working outside the traditional university structure such as independent scholars, professional field archaeologists, museum curators, and conservators. It is our hope that this series will serve as a concise guide to the most recent research undertaken by early career scholars and the diverse and inspiring new trends in the archaeology of the Prehistoric Aegean, as well as shining a light on the future direction of the discipline. Summary This volume positions source scholarship as integral to an understanding of the transmission of knowledge across intellectual, social, and material networks in early medieval England. Essays in this collection situate source studies in Old English and Anglo-Latin literature within a range of theoretical and methodological approaches as varied as disability studies, feminist theory, history of science, and network analysis, tracing how ideas move across cultures and showing how studying sources enables us to represent the diversity of medieval voices embedded in any given text. The essays in this volume extend the work of Charles D. Wright, who mentored a generation of scholars in methodologies of source study. The essays are organized into three sections. The first demonstrates how source studies facilitate tracing ideas across space and time. The second explores what happens to texts and ideas when they are transmitted from one culture, language, or historical moment to another. The third shows how sources illuminate wider cultural discourses. The volume attests to the flexibility of source work for early medieval English literature and argues for increased access to the tools that make such work possible.
