‎"Ce livre est une bonne monographie sur l'unique école privée d'architecture existant en France, rédigée par un spécialiste de l'histoire de l'architecture. L'Ecole centrale d'architecture, rebaptisée spéciale en 1870, est fondée par Emile Trélat en 1865 sur le modèle de l'Ecole centrale des arts et manufactures. Cette création, conçue en réaction contre l'enseignement académique délivré alors par l'Ecole des Beaux-arts, vise à promouvoir un enseignement libéral et rationnel de l'architecture, associant à l'éducation plastique une solide formation technique, le tout en seulement trois années. Après des débuts difficiles, l'Ecole, devenue d'utilité publique en 1870, parvient à trouver place dans le paysage architectural français, malgré l'hostilité de l'Ecole des Beaux-arts, mais c'est une place somme toute modeste : les effectifs sont réduits (le nombre des diplômés oscille entre 6 et 20 chaque année entre 1880 et 1930) et l'enseignement qui s'y donne ne semble pas avoir été d'une grande originalité, la direction de l'école se ralliant même, très explicitement, à l'esprit beaux-arts après 1910." ‎Cette monographie assez rare peut se lire à deux niveaux : c'est bien sûr une étude sur l'institution mi-scientifique mi-commerciale qu'est la pharmacie centrale ; mais c'est aussi une description de l'ancien Hôtel d'Aumont (jusqu'à la page 102 du volume), terminé en 1648, sis au 7 rue de Jouy et qui était alors affecté à cette administration, depuis 1859. Il fut d'ailleurs passablement défiguré par cette occupation pas du tout adaptée à sa destination première, jusqu'à son rachat en 1936 par la Ville de Paris, qui le fit restaurer.
