Summary During his second stay in Paris (1297-1299), Ramon Llull developed an extraordinary literary activity writing 16 works, some of them of considerable length. His attention was once again focused on the presentation of the Art, either to summarize it in accordance with the new changes he had introduced (beginning with the Tabula generalis, op. 53, ROL XXVII), or to present it as a method of renewal of the particular sciences (astronomy and geometry) or as an instrument in the debate on the errors condemned by the bishop of Paris in 1277. The four works presented in this volume are examples of this activity. The Disputatio Eremitae et Raimundi (op. 76) not only represents Llull's closest approximation to the university style of studying the science of theology, based on the Sentences of Peter Lombard, but also the most radical application of his Art as opposed to any discussion fed by the exegesis of "auctoritates". In Arbor philosophiae amoris (op. 77), on the other hand, the application of the Art follows the intent of his previous Ars amativa boni (op. 46, ROL XXIX), thus revealing the intimate connection between the austerity of the artistic language and the exuberance of the contemplative language, the true hallmark of Lullian mysticism. The Consolatio Venetorum (op. 78) illustrates the innovative approach that the Lullian project offers for the moral and political life of the Church. There is no medieval Latin manuscript tradition of the Cantus Raimundi (op. 79). Summary This work by Ramon Llull, originally composed in Catalan ('Art de fer e solre questions'), was written in Rome in 1295. It is also known as Lectura super Artem inventivam et Tabulam generalem, as it attempts to make the Ars inventiva veritatis (op. 44) and Tabula generalis (op. 53) more approachable. In the prologue Llull expresses his wish for this work to be translated into Latin. It belongs to the so-called encyclopaedic writings in the Lullian production, and the author announces a thousand questions related mainly to theology. The present work aims to provide a general technique applicable to any subject, a practical usage of the Ars inventiva veritatis and the Tabula generalis. In general, Llull develops some aspects dealt with in op. 44 and op. 53 in order to solve possible objections or to experiment with new procedures. It is another step in the great epistemological project of the Majorcan: to establish a new general science that overcomes the difficulties inherent in scholastic-Aristotelian science, to apply its method to the articles of the Christian faith, and to create a universal scientific system as a solid basis for the other sciences.

Ernst Haeckel (1834?1919) was a German-born biologist, naturalist, evolutionist, artist, philosopher, and doctor, who spent his life researching flora and fauna from the highest mountaintops to deepest ocean. A vociferous supporter and developer of Darwin?s theories of evolution, he denounced religious dogma, abandoned an early career in medicine, authored philosophical treatises, gained a doctorate in zoology, and coined scientific terms which have passed into common usage, including ecology, phylum, and stem cell. Haeckel?s colossal legacy has fascinated, confounded, and polarized generations. But what was at the heart of his extraordinary life?s work? Rather like his intellectual forebear, Alexander von Humboldt, Haeckel was motivated not only to discover but also to explain. To do this, he created hundreds of detailed drawings, watercolors, and sketches of his findings which he published in successive volumes during the 20th century, including several marine organism collections and the majestic Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), which could serve as the cornerstone of Haeckel?s entire life project. Like a meticulous visual encyclopedia of living things, Haeckel?s work was as remarkable for its graphic precision and meticulous shading as for its understanding of organic evolution and cellular development. From bats to the box jellyfish, lizards to lichen, and spider legs to sea anemones, he emphasized the essential symmetries and order of nature, and found biological beauty in even the most unlikely of creatures. The prints not only furthered the study of natural history but also influenced generations of 20th-century artists and architects, from the emerging proponents of Art Nouveau to architects such as Hendrik Petrus Berlage, whose Amsterdam Commodities Exchange was inspired by Haeckel?s illustrations. In this book, we celebrate the scientific, artistic, and environmental importance of Haeckel?s work, with a collection of prints from several of his most important tomes on marine biology, including Die Radiolarien, Monographie der Medusen, Die Kalkschw mme: eine Monographie, and Kunstformen der Natur. At a time when biodiversity is increasingly threatened by human activities, the book is at once a visual masterwork, an underwater exploration, and a vivid reminder of the precious variety of life.

It?s not just flashing, snarling Porsche cars that racing photographer Rainer W. Schlegelmilch captures in these shots from 1963 to 1988 ? though his zoom effect lifts them dramatically off the page. It?s his story over the years, it?s the reality of the track, drivers? conversations, mechanics? dirty hands. Feel the vibrations and smell the oil!

At its height, the Dada movement not only upended European art, it also brought that tradition into unprecedented dialogue with non-European forms of expression. This book offers the first extended analysis of Dada?s exploration of non-Western art and culture. Richly illustrated essays present close analyses of artifacts from Africa, Asia, and Oceania in the context of Dada and through an ethnological lens. Contributors also investigate the ways in which the influence of Dada can be seen in postcolonial discourse and in the context of cultural transfer. Featuring works by Jean Arp, Hugo Ball, George Grosz, Raoul Hausmann, Hannah H ch, Man Ray, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Tristan Tzara, and many other artists, this is a major work that will enable a broad rethinking of Dada?s aims and achievements. With essays by Johannes Beltz, Jody Blake, Peter Bolz, Ralf Burmeister, Uwe Fleckner, Nanina Guyer, Christian Kaufmann, Walburga Krupp, Axel Langer, Alexis Malefakis, Fran ois Mottas, Michaela Oberhofer, Valentine Plisinier, Kathryn Smith, H l ne Thi rard, Esther Tisa Francini, Khanh Trinh, Mona de Weerdt, Michael White, and Roger Van Wyk. The book is published in conjunction with exhibitions at Museum Rietberg Z rich and Berlinische Galerie, Berlin in spring and summer 2016.
