Summary The sound image of Otherness has been a significant source of inspiration for Western music, especially since the late eighteenth century. Encounters with the racial and geographical Other fomented interest in unfamiliar musical traditions, which informed exotic projections by Western composers. This volume explores aspects of musical exoticism and its staging during the long nineteenth century, with a special focus on the Mediterranean. This diverse and yet historically interconnected region was arguably the heart of the exotic enterprise during this period. The intersection of exoticism, nationalism and empire is considered, with a special focus on the situation of Spain as both source of local colour and purveyor of musical exoticism. The essays in this volume explore elements of exoticism across a range of musical styles: from song to opera and the popular musical stage, and from instrumental to symphonic works. The analysis of this corpus also involves the examination of musical culture in dialogue with literature and figurative arts. While many of the essays focus on constructions of exoticism in individual works, several essays focus on repertories of musical exoticism and their coverage in musicological literature. Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat's complex relationship captivated the art world then and now. At a time when Warhol was already world famous and the elder statesman of New York cool, Basquiat was a downtown talent rising rapidly from the graffiti scene. Together, they forged an electrifying personal and professional partnership. As a prolific documentarian of his own world, Warhol extensively photographed and wrote of his friendship with Basquiat, all played against the backdrop of 1980s downtown New York City. It reveals not only the emotional depth of their relationship but also its ambiguities, extremities, and complexities. Produced in collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation and Jean-Michel Basquiat?s estate, this book chronicles the duo?s relationship in hundreds of previously unpublished photographs of Basquiat along with a dynamic cast of characters from Madonna to Grace Jones, Keith Haring to Fela Kuti. The shots are accompanied by entries from the legendary Andy Warhol Diaries, selected collaborative artworks, and extensive ephemera. Touching, intimate, and occasionally sardonic, Warhol on Basquiat is a voyeuristic glimpse into the lives of two of modern art?s brightest stars.

Summary Mary of Burgundy (r. 1477-1482) occupies an important place in the history of late medieval and early modern Europe, yet her life and principate have received relatively little scholarly attention. They are, however, key to the history both of the Low Countries and of Europe, since her marriage to Maximilian of Austria united the Habsburgs with the Valois-Burgundy dynasty, giving them vast territories on the borders of France. In this book, some of the best specialists in the field contribute to a better understanding of Mary's principate, its features, and its long-term perception. In the first part, the authors address the issue of Mary's contested legitimacy as a late medieval female ruler: law, literature, visual arts and theatrical representations are examined as means of communication, strengthening or weakening her authority. In the second part, the authors examine some of Mary's governmental tools and the agents behind them. Finally, the last part questions the ways in which Mary's power and her principate have been represented and reinterpreted in subsequent eras, often with political or social intent, beginning with Maximilian's long regency and reign immediately after her death, right up to modern-day Belgium. Summary This book explores the legend of Adam's Contract with Satan that was made after the expulsion from the Garden of Eden. This legend was current in the Eastern Orthodox churches of SE Europe as well as in the Caucasus. Unknown forms of the legend have been found in two traditions, the Romanian and the Armenian, and are investigated here. Notably this legend has found its way into folk stories and sometimes into folk music, showing how widely it was accepted and distributed. This legend also inspired images in both traditions. In Romania the most striking illustrations are to be found in Bukovina province, in frescos on the famous painted churches of that region, as well as in manuscripts. In Armenia features of this story are incorporated into the iconography of the Baptism of Christ in the River Jordan. Seeds of Knowledge highlights the collection of 15th to 17th-century European printed herbals of Dr. Peter Goop (Liechtenstein). Herbals were highly illustrated, critical texts to doctors and lay healthcare providers that included both the folkloric and medicinal uses of plants. The text and illustrations were repeatedly refined as the medicinal benefits of a plant's use were more clearly under-stood and the style of illustration tended towards higher degrees of naturalism. These books were working manuals and frequently annotated by readers with notes of herbal recipes/medicines or other uses not found in the printed text. Dr. Goop's collection is one of the most extensive in private hands. Using the Morgan's 10th-century manuscript of Dioscurides' De materia medica (MS M.652) as a centerpiece, this Thaw Gallery exhibition will explore developments in the understanding of the healthful and healing properties of plants, as Europe moved away from medicinal folklore towards an increased understanding of the natural world.

Summary The 'Leiden Glossary' provides a record of the understanding and interpretation of the patristic and grammatical texts studied at the Canterbury School of Theodore and Hadrian, regarded by Bede as the high point of Christian culture in early medieval England. Each entry in the 'Leiden Glossary' is provided with detailed commentary on the sources consulted by the two Canterbury masters (earlier glossaries; Isidore; Eucherius) and the later uses of the glossary by compilers of the Epinal-Erfurt and Corpus glossaries. The 'Leiden Glossary' is thus a key witness to one of the greatest schools of learning in the early Middle Ages.

Cindy Wright creates large-scale oil paintings on canvas. At first glance the monumental still life paintings appear to be photo-realistic, using the photographic methods of cropping compositions and intense source lighting. But on closer inspection, the range of mark-making and painterly applications become astoundingly apparent. Wright?s work echoes the morbid tradition of ?vanitas? from the Dutch Old Masters of the 16th and 17th Century. Between beauty and decay, archetypal symbols like the human scull, rotten fruit, raw flesh, and dead animals traditionally represent the transience of life. Within a contemporary context, these symbols may refer to mass consumption or the exploitation of natural resources. However, this is not essentially the artist?s intent. Rather than being shocking or moralising, the images evoke a sense of peacefulness, silence, and fragility. Wright?s subjects are taken from her immediate surroundings and are transformed into iconic images for our times. This second edition of the catalog is published as a reprint collecting a selection of paintings from the last 20 years up to 2023, and exists alongside the artist?s exhibition part of the INBOX program at MHKA Museum in Antwerp.

"Michael Roberts is the Jean Cocteau of the fashion world," wrote the celebrated New Yorker editor Tina Brown in 1997, welcoming her new fashion editor to the most prestigious magazine in the world. Having already served for many years as a style editor (The London Sunday Times, Vanity Fair) and having produced numerous illustrations, photographs, paintings and columns of fashion criticism for various media, Roberts had already had his name coupled with Cocteau's, but his striking visual style is collected here for the first time. From evocative pen-and-ink sketches to acrylic paintings to intensely witty New Yorker covers created from cut paper, these works capture the fads, foibles and fashionability of our times. Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, in her introduction to "this beautiful book" calls them "fiendishly accurate satire." And the shoe guru Manolo Blahnik writes, "His drawings grasp fashion moments like a photo could never do." That a major part of the book was created through the painstaking method of paper collage especially appeals to the internationally famed fashion designer John Galliano. He writes, "I have avidly collected his work, along with doing my own collages, for years, and I am honored to be a part of this book."

Summary Nineteenth- and early twentieth-century advertisements for pianos, pianists, merchants, music publishers and, above all, for domestic purchases are full of images employed for commercial rather than cultural purposes. This volume examines the commercial characters and significances of how pianos were pictured between the early days of 'modern' marketing to today. During the early 1920s, piano sales peaked in the United States; nevertheless, pianos have continued to be sold even as radios, record players, television sets and electric keyboards increasingly replace them as must-have sources of entertainment and improvement. The market for player pianos, although comparatively short-lived, also provided manufacturers and retailers with opportunities to depict pianos and pictures. Summary This book offers a study of the scientific landscape of medieval Bavaria during the higher Middle Ages. Based on manuscripts as well as medieval library catalogues, it tries to quantify the so-called 'Discovery of Nature' and tries to analyse it from the perspective of a monastic landscape in which the arrival of the astrolab in the 11th century marked a significant turning point. By introducing new methods and questions into the traditional body of Carolingian astronomy, monastic scholars of this area played a decisive, albeit neglected, role in the development of medieval astronomy. The book reconstructs the studies of the monk Wilhelm von Hirsau who tackled some of the most urgent problems of astronomy of his time: correcting the dates of the solstices and finding latitude. These studies are then placed in the broader development of medieval science, particularly focusing on his sphaera, an instrument that has often been wrongly understood as a teaching device. In contrast, the present study argues that this instrument is not only William's lost astronomical clock, but also the first example for stationary observational astronomy in medieval Europe as well as an important milestone towards the empirical astronomy of future centuries. Room 606 is the last surviving interior of the SAS House: an unparalleled example of modern architecture and design, completed in 1960. Jacobsen was one of the outstanding architects of the twentieth century, throughout his career, creating complete settings for daily life and dissolving the boundaries between architecture, interior and industrial design. The chapters are organized thematically: each consists of three sections that together look at Room 606 as a microcosm of the SAS House, reconstruct the original building, and trace the connections between Jacobsen's masterpiece and his other works - from whole buildings to household objects.

Summary Founded in 1132, Fountains Abbey became the wealthiest English Cistercian monastery - yet relatively little analysis has been made of its surviving records to investigate how its wealth was controlled and sustained. This book deals with this secular aspect of the religious community at Fountains, investigating in particular the way in which prosaic business records were compiled and redacted. It traces the transmission of data from original charters through successive versions of cartularies, and in the process establishes the existence of a previously unknown manuscript. It also reveals how abbots in the fifteenth century interacted with and adapted the records in their care. In this process, two quite different aspects of monastic life are uncovered. First, it sheds new light on the history of Fountains Abbey through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, amongst other things how it responded to the turmoil of the Black Death, and discloses for the first time the allegiance of one abbot to the Lancastrian cause during the Wars of the Roses. Second, it reveals the worldly skills shown by the community of Fountains that were successfully applied to exploit the monastery's large landholdings across Yorkshire, mainly through wool and agricultural production, but also through fisheries, tanning, mining, and metalworking. The economic success of these activities enabled the abbey to become a prosperous institution which rivalled the wealth of the aristocracy. This book addresses recordkeeping and archival memory at one, Cistercian, monastery - albeit a well-endowed and prosperous one - in the north of England. However, its treatment of archival sources could be extended to other houses in different geographical locations and different orders, to enable comparisons between monasteries dealing with economic change and social and political upheaval in the later Middle Ages. Dit boek toont een overzicht van haar werk tot heden.nnAll the aspects of 'attention' are a recurring theme in the art of Anne Daems. In her video work, photography and drawings, she shows how everyday life intertwines with the sublime and how -often without noticing - private and public issues get mixed up. This book is an overview of her work.nnAnne Daems was born in Antwerp in 1966.

Summary Peter of Ireland (Petrus de Ybernia) was born sometime around the beginning of the thirteenth century in Ireland, probably of a Norman family. He probably left Ireland aged around age 15 to pursue his studies abroad. His interest in medical and scientific questions would suggest a stay at Oxford, whereas his approach to logic would suggest a Parisian influence. By the middle of the century he was Professor of Logic and Natural Philosophy at the University at Naples. Peter is perhaps one of the best known of medieval Irish thinkers on the continent owing to the fact that he was held to be the teacher of the young Thomas Aquinas at Naples University from 1239-44. As such, it would be he who, in all likelihood, first introduced Thomas to the study of Aristotle and perhaps also to the commentaries of Avicenna and Averroes. The works presented here date from at least a decade later, and relate to lectures given at Naples in the 1250s and 1260s. The extent to which he was held in respect by his contemporaries is to be seen in his solution (determinatio) to the disputed question on the origin of the design of an animal's body which was held before King Manfred around 1260. It was, perhaps the culmination of a famous scholarly career. Summary The proceedings of the S.I.E.P.M. Colloquium at Maynooth published in this volume shed new light on the development of the perception of the other within the different philosophical, religious, and cultural traditions in the late Middle Ages as well as the early modern era in both Christian and Islamic thought. The contributions consider not only the theological background but also the philosophical presuppositions of the concepts which were used to develop various apologetic writings and theological treatises that dealt with questions of cultural and religious difference. The rich and diverse medieval and early modern tradition of engaging with the other and the arguments for or against toleration on topics that are equally diverse are discussed with reference to both the Western and Eastern Christian tradition, to the contributions of Islamic Thinkers on the topic, and to the flourishing tradition of a constructed interreligious dialogue such as that between Christians and Jews. Finally, this book includes a number of important investigations exploring the relationship between toleration and rights not only within Europe but also in the lands of the so-called new world and its indigenous peoples where arguments of exclusion were grounded intheories such as grace-based dominium. The central theme of Rubens?s paintings is the human figure, often represented nude or partially clothed and involved in dramatic action. As a history painter, Rubens?s acclaimed skill in rendering the human body whether male or female, lean or fleshy, mature in years or young, animated or lifeless, vigorous or diseased, heroic or cowering, sensuous or decrepit, idealised or blemished and imperfect enabled him to vie with the greatest artists ever known, while creating increasing demand for his work among Europe?s intellectual, cultural, religious and political lite. His mastery in depicting human figures and their dynamic movements suggests that he followed the example of Leonardo da Vinci (1452?1519), Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475?1564) and other Italian artists he admired, who made extensive studies of human anatomy. As pointed out by two recent perceptive scholars, however, the robust, muscular male nudes in action who appear in so many of Rubens?s narrative paintings are often anatomically inaccurate. Moreover, and as will become clear in this volume, Rubens?s approach to anatomical study was not closely similar to that of any of his forbears. In many respects his ways of working are comparable to those of Michelangelo, who used the knowledge he acquired through dissection not to pursue verisimilitude but to invent the anatomy of his figures according to his own idea of physical beauty, strength and expression. Yet unlike Italian Renaissance artists such as Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Alessandro Allori (1535?1607), Rubens did not perform or witness dissections and seems to have rarely studied from the live nude model. What, then, was the nature and extent of Rubens?s study of human anatomy? The present volume will offer an answer to that question, while also establishing when and where most of his anatomical works were made and reassessing the issue of their intended purpose.

The posthumous release of the last book that Michael Wolf himself worked on, published to mark the fifth anniversary of his death Award-winning German photographer Michael Wolf (1954?2019) grew up in Canada, Europe and the United States. In 1994, Wolf moved to Hong Kong, where he worked for eight years as a contract photographer for Stern Magazine. The core of Wolf?s work consisted of capturing life in megacities. Many of his projects depict the architecture and popular culture of metropolises, and Hong Kong Whispers is no exception. This book contains a stunning series of photos showing the vibrant global city of Hong Kong. Wolf?s photographs are displayed in dialogue with the acerbic and ambiguous drawings of Arpaïs Du Bois (°1973). Based on intense engagement with Wolf?s series of images, she reflects on unnoticed moments and events that characterise life in the metropolis. The visual exchange between photographs and drawings took shape during Du Bois?s stay of several weeks in Hong Kong (2014), during which the two artists observed the city both together and individually.
