‎Unique édition. L'édifice est l'ancien palais des comtes de Poitiers, affecté au siège de la cour d'appel de Poitiers à partir de la Révolution, et ce, jusqu'en 2019. Lucien Magne (1849-1916) était alors professeur d’histoire de l’architecture à l’École des beaux-arts de Paris (1891-1916). Mais auparavant, il avait exercé les fonctions d'architecte diocésain de Poitiers à partir de 1885.Envoi autographe de l'auteur à l'architecte Juste Lisch (1828-1910), qui exerça surtout son activité dans le domaine de la restauration des monuments. Dans le même genre que la monographie qui lui était ainsi offerte, on lui doit les travaux de restauration des Palais de justice de Lyon, Dijon, Agen et La Rochelle. ‎Rare first edition of Magni’s important account of Athens, constituting one of the earliest descriptions from the modern era to present accurate eyewitness illustrations of Athen’s legendary monuments. Magni was part of the Embassy of Marquis de Nointel to the Ottoman court and the present publication is the first published, however unoffical, account of any part of this voyage. Charles-Marie-François Olier, marquis de Nointel, was the French ambassador to the Ottoman court of Mehmed IV, from 1670 to 1679. By June 1673, he had achieved a reduction in customs charges, putting France on equal terms with England and Holland and giving new life to French commerce in the Levant. The project of placing Christians and Christian institutions under French patronage was less successful, resulting in numerous actions at law. In September 1673, Nointel made a tour to enregister these new prerogatives it took him to Chios, the Cyclades, Palestine, and Egypt, ending in Athens. It lasted seventeen months.Nointel brought a painter and draughtsman, who made over 500 drawings of towns, antiquities, ceremonies, and examples of local fetes and customs in Asia Minor, Greece and Palestine. Nointel’s personal account of the Parthenon and Carrey’s drawings, however, remained unpublished until the mid-nineteenth century, which makes Magni’s present work the earliest published account the embassy of marquis de Nointel. “After the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and the Turkish conquest of Greece a few years later, Athens, and the Acropolis in particular, became virtually inaccessible to foreigners. For inspiration and examples from the classical past, the architects of the Renaissance thus relied on Roman ruins, which, though regarded as mere imitations of the Greek originals, were readily visible throughout Europe […] The rich vocabulary of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century architecture was developed without reference to the actual architecture of Greece, over time, the glories of Rome were accepted by many as the real source of inspiration for contemporary architecture and extolled as such.” (Roy, The Ruins of the Most Beautiful Monuments of Greece). ‎This interdisciplinary volume is a unique combination of the history of early modern emotions and art history, bringing together case studies which provide us with new insights on early modern artists and their emotional lives, often based on archival and literary sources. The history of emotions has gained more and more scholarly attention, evidenced by an ?affective turn? or ?emotional turn? in historical research. Many publications have appeared, and internationally oriented research centres and conferences have been set up and organized. This volume brings the importance of a clear understanding of historical feelings into the research area of art historians. Even though the depiction of emotions is an important discipline in its own right, in this volume the concept of the artist and his or her own personal feelings, often in connection with the creation of a work of art, is prioritised. Although it is argued that a painter had to be able to feel emotions in order to depict them correctly, the articles brought together in this volume focus primarily on the traces of artist?s emotions (?feelings?) that can be derived from archival documents, secondary sources, and paintings (?facts?). Each author has tried in his or her own way to elucidate both the written and visual expressions of an artist?s (personal) emotions.
