‎Peintre et graveur, Hieronymus Cock (Anvers 1518-1570) fut un des premiers artistes du nord de l'Europe a creer, avec son epouse Volcxken Diericx, une maison d'edition d'estampes. Des 1548, 'Aux Quatre Vents' publia des centaines d'eaux-fortes et de gravures. Inspirees des fresques et des tableaux de Raphael et de Bronzino, des ruines classiques et des sculptures antiques, mais aussi des dessins d'artistes septentrionaux comme Maarten van Heemskerck et Frans Floris, elles furent diffusees dans toute l'Europe, ou elles contribucrent a repandre les ideaux de beaute de la Renaissance. Ayant discerne le talent de Pieter Bruegel, Cock lui commanda une soixantaine de planches. De sa propre initiative, il realisa egalement des gravures a partir des compositions monumentales et debordantes d'imagination de Jerome Bosch. Dans ce livre, qui va de pair avec une exposition organisee a Louvain et Paris, les activites de Cock et de son epouse ont ete minutieusement reconstituees et analysees. ‎Pieter Bruegel de Oude (1525/30-1569) is een van de beroemdste schilders van de Nederlanden. ‎Geen klassiek fotoboek met wat uitleg, maar een rijkelijk ge llustreerd chronologisch overzicht van de oudste bewaard gebleven Brugse foto?s. Auteur Jos Demar e ( 1962), heemkundige, gids en gepassioneerd door oude cartografie en fotografie, neemt ons mee op pad. Samen met de eerste fotografen in de jaren 1840 zakken we af naar Brugge om de cultuurpracht vast te leggen, net zoals schilders dat deden. Foto?s liegen echter minder dan schilderijen. Heel minutieus analyseert Demar e foto na foto om de precieze datering ervan te achterhalen. Hij corrigeert daarbij kritisch, maar met respect, vroegere foute dateringen van o.a. Jaak Rau door bouwfases van Brugse torens en gevels te volgen die hij vond in krantenberichten, bouwvergunningen en aquarellen uit die tijd. Razend interessant voor wie van dergelijk detectivewerk houdt. Origineel is dat hij op exact hetzelfde moment (dag en uur) hetzelfde zicht fotografeerde als zowat 170 jaar geleden om zo dezelfde schaduwinval te bekomen. Even fascinerend zijn de architecturale verschillen of details die hij opmerkt op bv. plakkaten en standbeelden. Na de oudste portretten door o.a. Buffa (1840) en foto?s van Brugse stadszichten door de Schot Muir Wood (29 juli 1847) passeren zowat twaalf latere al of niet Belgische fotografen de revue. De glasnegatieffoto?s uit 1858 zijn zo scherp en populair dat het begrijpelijk is dat zij de twee oudere proced s, daguerreotypie en calotypie, verdreven. Daarom eindigt het boek circa 1860. Het boek wordt een referentiewerk. Met bewondering voor zijn gedrevenheid en volgehouden speurwerk vinden we het een eer dat de auteur zijn werk door onze Heemkring Brugs Ommeland laat uitgeven. Het boek is een aanrader, ook als geschenkboek.‎

‎By the late Middle Ages, architecture became an increasingly important means of representation of princely rule and institutions. In addition to their symbolic significance, the ruler?s buildings served a host of practical purposes. Obviously, castles and fortresses defended the territory, while urban and rural residences served the itinerant court during its proceedings, but their possessions also comprised a wider network of estates that included infrastructure and agricultural, commercial, industrial, and administrative buildings. Together, these networks of sites became a significant means of consolidating the sovereigns? power and served as key instruments for promoting their rule. To tighten the control over their possessions and to ensure their upkeep, rulers set up Offices of Works, permanent administrative bodies entrusted with their management. These building administrations have not yet been systematically studied, and it remains unclear to what extent such centralised institutions developed autonomously, responding to local conditions and requirements, or were part of international developments facilitated by the close networks of the European courts. This volume, with contributions from architectural historians, administrative historians, and court historians, represents a first attempt to compare these institutions on a pan-European scale from the late Middle Ages up to the end of the seventeenth century. It aims to explore the relationships between the local specificities of these organisations and their shared characteristics.
