‎Geen klassiek fotoboek met wat uitleg, maar een rijkelijk geïllustreerd chronologisch overzicht van de oudste bewaard gebleven Brugse foto?s. Auteur Jos Demarée (°1962), heemkundige, gids en gepassioneerd door oude cartografie en fotografie, neemt ons mee op pad. Samen met de eerste fotografen in de jaren 1840 zakken we af naar Brugge om de cultuurpracht vast te leggen, net zoals schilders dat deden. Foto?s liegen echter minder dan schilderijen. Heel minutieus analyseert Demarée foto na foto om de precieze datering ervan te achterhalen. Hij corrigeert daarbij kritisch, maar met respect, vroegere foute dateringen van o.a. Jaak Rau door bouwfases van Brugse torens en gevels te volgen die hij vond in krantenberichten, bouwvergunningen en aquarellen uit die tijd. Razend interessant voor wie van dergelijk detectivewerk houdt. Origineel is dat hij op exact hetzelfde moment (dag en uur) hetzelfde zicht fotografeerde als zowat 170 jaar geleden om zo dezelfde schaduwinval te bekomen. Even fascinerend zijn de architecturale verschillen of details die hij opmerkt op bv. plakkaten en standbeelden. Na de oudste portretten door o.a. Buffa (1840) en foto?s van Brugse stadszichten door de Schot Muir Wood (29 juli 1847) passeren zowat twaalf latere al of niet Belgische fotografen de revue. De glasnegatieffoto?s uit 1858 zijn zo scherp en populair dat het begrijpelijk is dat zij de twee oudere procedés, daguerreotypie en calotypie, verdreven. Daarom eindigt het boek circa 1860. Het boek wordt een referentiewerk. Met bewondering voor zijn gedrevenheid en volgehouden speurwerk vinden we het een eer dat de auteur zijn werk door onze Heemkring Brugs Ommeland laat uitgeven. Het boek is een aanrader, ook als geschenkboek.‎

‎Summary Readers and Hearers is a broad, multi-disciplinary treatment of the chanting of the Scriptures (epistle and gospel) at Mass in the Middle Ages. This form of chanting followed a procedure that continued to be used in the western Latin liturgy until the mid-twentieth century and in the traditional Latin Mass today. The readings were not simply spoken, but chanted to formulae that stood halfway between heightened speech and song (cantillation). Specific clerics (lectors, subdeacons, deacons), distinctively vested, were commissioned to chant the Scriptures, employing a ritual that came to be surrounded by an elaborate ceremonial. For the gospel this involved acolytes, processional movement, and the employment of ecclesiastical 'furniture' (pulpit, ambo, and choir screen). While the laity attending Mass could generally see all of the ritual actions, what did they understand of the Latin text they were hearing? In areas where Latin was spoken in Antiquity the ability to comprehend Latin passively as it morphed into the Romance vernaculars survived longer than generally assumed. Naturally, in Germanic lands, christianized in the early Middle Ages, that capability never existed. Several manuals were created to guide layfolk to engage in devotions suitable to the various parts of the Mass.
