‎Dit boek beschrijft op een begrijpelijke manier hoe men de meest voorkomende fotografische en fotomechanische proced s van 1839 tot heden kan herkennen. Het is bedoeld voor iedereen die te maken heeft met historische foto s: werknemers van archieven en musea, kunsthistorici, verzamelaars en ook degenen die oude familiefoto s op een verantwoorde wijze willen bewaren. Fotograaf en fotohistoricus Jan van Dijk beschrijft niet alleen wanneer en hoe historische proced s, zoals de daguerreotypie, de autochroom, de albuminedruk en vele andere, tot stand zijn gekomen maar hij laat tevens zien hoe men deze proced s kan herkennen en dateren zonder de originele afdruk aan te tasten. Opnamen op glas en kunststofdragers, afdrukken op verschillende soorten fotopapieren maar ook foto s op materialen als keramiek en glas passeren de revue. Nieuw in de Nederlandse fotoliteratuur is de aandacht die Van Dijk besteedt aan kleurenproced s en digitale afdruktechnieken vanuit een oogpunt van herkenning van hun materialen en structuren. En passant maakt hij duidelijk hoezeer de ontwikkelingen in de fotografische techniek hebben doorgewerkt in wetenschap, commercie en allerlei takken van industrie. Het boek is voortgekomen uit de cursus Determineren van Fotografische Proced s en Druktechnieken die vanaf 1992 werd gegeven aan het prentenkabinet van de Universiteit Leiden door de auteur in samenwerking met foto- en drukhistoricus Johan de Zoete. De eindredactie van de tekst was in handen van Ingeborg Leijerzapf, jarenlang werkzaam bij het Leidse Prentenkabinet als conservator fotografie.‎

Behalve een beschrijving van elk opgenomen voorwerp wordt zoveel mogelijk de betekenis van de overleden personen voor Hemiksem en de parochie belicht. Alle voorwerpen worden gedocumenteerd met een recente foto en vergezeld van een transcriptie om te leesbaarheid van de soms verweerde grafteksten te ontcijferen. Yet, outside the circle of specialists and collectors, Hervier has ? until now ? been neglected. Apart from his work, Hervier hardly left any traces, and little is known of Hervier?s life. However, his annotations, the dates and locations on his countless drawings and watercolours, do provide some insight into his existence. Many of these are used in this book to illustrate his biography. Jan Willem van den Noort has spent many years researching Hervier?s graphic work. His findings and insights are published in this book. The illustrated catalogue of 237 etchings and lithographs adds more than 70 prints to the previous total. ‎
