Le batiment, un edifice de style classique en forme de U, fut construit vers 1770 pour servir de residence d???ete et de pavillon de chasse au comte Charles de Velbruck, prince-eveque de Liege. Velbruck etait un humaniste eclaire, feru d???art, de science et de nature. Le chateau etait son bien personnel et alla a ses heritiers, qui en sont toujours les proprietaires et continuent de l???entretenir avec amour et respect. Les plantations et jardins du chateau ont egalement ete conserves et entretenus avec soin au fil des siecles. Ils sont notamment reputes pour leur collection de roses anciennes et sauvages, encore constituee pour une part des rosiers originaux du xviiie siecle. Le potager de deux hectares, avec son cellier a legumes traditionnel toujours en usage, et le parc paysager a l???anglaise ne sont que quelques-unes des autres raisons de visiter Hex, que ce soit a travers cet ouvrage ou dans la realite.
