‎P., Mallet-Bachelier, 1863/1864; demi-basane, dos orné de filets dorés (reliures de l'époque), (dos passé, rousseurs, quelques mouillures dans les marges extérieures au tome 1), T.1 : 32pp., 528pp., T.2 : 11pp., 456pp.‎

‎---- Seconde édition REVUE et CORRIGEE par E. PROUHET ---- "REMAIN A CLASSIC FOR HALF A CENTURY" (DSB) ---- "In 1838, Sturm was named répétiteur of analysis in Liouville's course at the Ecole Polytechnique where he became professor of analysis and mechanics in 1840... In 1837 he became chevalier of the Légion of Honor and in 1840 he won the Copley Medal of the Royal Society and was elected a member of that body... An excellent lecturer, he was admired for both his personal qualities and his knowledge... His Cours de mécanique, like his Cours d'analyse was used by many students and remained a classic for half a century... Sturm, who was so adept at combining mathematics with physics in his work, appears today, by virtue of his modes of thinking, as a very modern scientist. Since 1900 there has been growing interest in his mathematical work, especially in the United States...". (DSB XIII pp. 126/132)**4913/n6de-4912/n6de-4909/n6de‎

‎---- Seconde édition française de ces deux ouvrages traduits par le père Antoine Rivière avec un essai sur la théorie des couleurs de NEWTON ---- "Brook TAYLOR, mathématicien anglais, étudie expérimentalement les questions scientifiques de son temps et donne une nouvelle théorie de la perspective" ---- "TAYLOR developed his theory of perspective in a formal and rigorous fashion in a sequence of theorems and proofs. The most aoutstanding and original of his ideas in this fiels were his definition and use of vanishing points and vanishing lines for all lines and planes, and his developement of a theory and practive for the inverse problem of perspective that later served as a basis for work by Lambert and for the development of photogrammetry. TAYLOR also made free use of the idea of associating infinitely distant points of intersection with parallel lines, and he sought to devise mehtods for doing geometric constructions directly in perspective". ‎---- TRES RARE REUNION DE MEMOIRES ORIGINAUX DE CHEBYCHEV PRESENTES A L'ACADEMIE DES SCIENCES DE SAINT-PETERSBOURG ---- These papers concern the doctrine of limiting value of integrale. "Tchebychev's importance in the history of science consists not only in his discoveries but also in his founding of a great scientific school. It is sometimes called the Tchebychev school, but more frequently the Petersburg school. The Petersburg mathematical school owes its existence partly to the activity of Tchebychev's elder contemporaries, such as Bunyakovski and Ostrograski ; nevertheless, it was Chebyschev who founded the school, directed and inspired it for many years and influenced the tend of mathematics teaching at Petersburg university. Tchebychev's general approach to mathematics quite naturally resulted in his aspiration toward the effective solution of problems and the discovery of algorithms giving either an exact numerical answer o, if this proved impossible, an approximation ready for scientific and practical applications. He interpreted the strictness of the theory in the event of approximate evaluations as a possibility of precise definition of limits not trespassed by the error of approximation.". ‎---- EDITION ORIGINALE ---- TRES RARE ---- BEL EXEMPLAIRE ---- "Fully occupied by his teaching duties and his responsibilities as an academician, Varignon had no leisure to prepare works for publication... From the papers he left at his death, most of which are now lost, his disciples assembled several posthumous works : Nouvelle mécanique, Eclaircissements sur l'analyse des infiniment petits (1725) and Elémens de mathématiques (1731). His intense pedagogical activity, extending over more than thirty years, constituted his chief contribution to the progress of science and was the source of his fame. By inaugurating a chair devoted specifically to mathematics at the Collège Mazarin, he joined the handful of men who were then teaching advanced mathematics... In working with the model of falling bodies, Varignon encountered difficulties in obtaining acceleration as a second derivative. This problem had the advantage, however, of obliging him to reassess calculus. His acceptance of the new procedures occurred between 1692 and 1695, and he was among those who gave the most favorable reception to the publication of L'Hospital's Analyse des infiniment petits. The Eclaircissemens is composed of critical notes that Varignon, as professor, considered necessary in presenting L'Hospital's pioneering work to young mathematicians - further evidence of his constructive role in the movement to transform the operations used in mathematics. But Varignon accomplished even more : in 1700-1701 he refuted Rolle's arguments against the new calculus, challenged the cabal that had formed within the Academy, and obliged Leibniz to furnish a more precise account of his ideas. Leibniz, to be sure, did not give him all the aid desired. Nevertheless, he encouraged Varignon to cease debating principles and to start developing mechanical applications of the new mathematics. The questions that Varignon subsequently treated show how faithfully he followed Leibniz' advice. In his course at the Collège Royal for 1722-1723, Varignon planned to discuss the foundations of infinitesimal calculus but was able to do no more than outline his ideas. Although he died before he could present what was undoubtedly the core of a lifetime's experience, that experience had already borne fruit". (DSB XIII)**5158/ARM3-5159/ARB3‎
