È conosciuta anche come "The Botanical Magazine" o "Flower-Garden Displayed". Curtis began publication of "The Botanical Magazine" in February 1787. In the preface to Volume I he states: The present periodical publication owes its commencement to the repeated solicitations of several ladies and gentlemen.. who were frequently lamenting the want of a work, which might enable them, not only to acquire a systematic knowledge of the foreign plants growing in their gardens, but which might at the same time afford them the best information respecting their culture - in fact, a work, in which botany and gardening.. or the labour of Linnaeus and Miller, might happily be combined'. The "Magazine" was immediately successful, and the early volumes were quickly re-issued as is shown by their variously dated title-pages (during Curtis's lifetime 2000 copies of each number were sold).After William Curtis, who edited the first 13 volumes, the editors included John Sims (1800-1826), W.J. Hooker (1827-1865) and J. D. Hooker (1865-1904). Most of the early plates were from drawings by Sydenham Edwards and the colouring by William Graves. Other distinguished artists included J. Sowerby, J. Curtis, W. Jackson Hooker, W.H. Fitch, Matilda Smith, Lilian Snelling, and Stella Ross-Craig. Up to the end of volume 70 the plates were engraved on copper; thereafter lithography either from stone or zinc was employed, until colour printing was introduced in 1948. Until that date the plates were coloured by hand (Sotheby, Magnificent botanical books, 1987, n. 88)."Botanical Magazine" is the oldest current scientific periodical of its kind with coloured illustrations in the world.. in the beauty of production and high standard of its contributions it can claim a unique place (Synge P., Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society (1948),73, pp. 5-6). In 1984 it was incorporated into a new enlarged publication entitled "The Kew Magazine".William Curtis (Alton 1746-1799), a british botanist and entomologist. From an early age he developed a passion to study natural history. He moved to London to become apprenticed as an apothecary.. His life's work, "Flora Londinensis", was never a success. Being a lavish folio work which took many years to complete, it all but ruined him financially. Success came towards the end of his life when he started publishing his "Botanical Magazine"..Following Curtis's death in 1799, his brother Thomas Curtis took over the publication. However, it was his nephew, the biographer Samuel Curtis who really established the Magazine.. There were three stages in the production of a plate for the "Botanical Magazine". First an artist produced a drawing or painting of the plant, a plate would then be produced by an engraver, and finally each plate was hand coloured by a colourist. On each plate is written the name of the artist, then del', then the engraver's name followed by sculp'. One of the two main artists involved in the earlier "Botanical Magazine" was Sydenham Edwards, who was William Curtis's main artist. James Sowerby (1757-1822) was the other principal artist.. The main engraver for the "Botanical Magazine" was Francis Sansom. Although he was responsible for a few drawings for Curtis, he was the main engraver for the magazine. When the Magazine was published, it could be bought uncoloured, coloured or finished with extraordinary care. It is thought that the latter was done by colourist William Graves.. Plates were hand coloured until as late as the 1950s. A team of young women were employed, each with a single colour to apply. This was a monotonous activity, and nowadays with the advent of good quality printing, hand colouring is no longer necessary. Following "Flora Londinensis", the "Botanical Magazine" and less successful publications such as "Materia Medica" and Linnaeus' systems of botany, William Curtis had plans to produce a natural history of the British Isles. He made copious notes on many aspects of Britain's natural history, and commissioned artwork for it from Sydenham Edwards, but it was never produced (così Curtis Museum, Hampshire Cultural Trust online). ‎Rare première édition française, traduite de langlaise (1819), du récit du périple dInde à Constantinople de William Heude, voyage effectué entre janvier 1817 à avril 1819 incluant des chapitres sur lArabie, la région des actuels émirats et Oman, ouvrage orné de 6 planches aquarellées et dune grande carte dépliante. Heude était lieutenant dans l'établissement militaire de Madras et devient plus tard chirurgien-major. Il était le petit-fils de Lady Harriet Sturgeon (née Watson-Wentworth ; sur du deuxième marquis de Rockingham). Il dédie son ouvrage à son parent (oncle ?) William Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, 4e comte Fitzwilliam (1748-1833), puissant et fortuné homme d'État britannique. Après Malabar et Bombay, lauteur se rends dans le golfe Persique, Mascate, Ormuz, Bahreïn, Ninive, Babylone, Bagdad, Mossoul, Mardin et Istanbul. Il décrit la vie des bédouins et des peuplades quil rencontre. P. 61, il donne une description des pirates du golfe: « Les pirates du golfe se composent de différentes tribus arabes. La principale, les Joasmis de Rass-al-Kymer, étant intimement unie avec celle des Wahabis, puissance déjà reconnue, notre gouvernement a éprouvé de la répugnance à les attaquer, et de là provient l'impunité dont ils abusent. Lauteur relate le raid britannique de 1809 dirigé par le capitaine Wainright contre ces pirates et la prise dassaut de Rass-all-Kymer. Heude mentione p. 77 la pêche des perles à Bahreïn : « En remontant le golfe Persique, nous ne passâmes devant aucune autre ile remarquable, si ce n'est peut-être celle de Bahreïn, célèbre par la pêche des perles, et par quelques sources d'eau fraîche qui se trouvent au fond de la mer, d'où les plongeurs en rapportent souvent qu'ils puisent à certaines profondeurs ». Lauteur donne plus loin une large description du peuple de lArabie et de sa culture : p. 176 : « Laffection que l'Arabe conçoit pour ses enfants et pour sa famille, s'étend sur tous les membres de sa tribu. Toutes les tentes, ou toutes les chaumières, sont ouvertes ; et, au milieu d'une horde de bandits, le vol est inconnu. Si la communauté de biens ne peut exister dans leur état de société, une libéralité sans bornes en tient la place, et la main de celui qui possède est toujours prête à donner à celui qui est dépourvu. » Heude relate en outre son remarquable périple à travers les montagnes du Kurdistan. L'iconographie est constituée de 6 planches, en coloris dépoque, représentant les habitants des régions visitées en costume traditionnel : Arabe Bédouin, derviche de Bassora, Juif de Bagdad, Tartare, Turc de Merdyn et Hamoud Beg -Effendi. Rare first French edition, translated from the English (1819), of the story of the journey from India to Constantinople by William Heude, journey made between January 1817 to April 1819 including chapters on Arabia, the region of the current emirates and Oman , work illustrated with 6 watercolor plates and a large folding map. Heude was a lieutenant in the Madras military establishment and later became surgeon-major. He was the grandson of Lady Harriet Sturgeon (née Watson-Wentworth; sister of the second Marquess of Rockingham). He dedicates his work to his relative (uncle?) William Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (1748-1833), powerful and wealthy British statesman. After Malabar and Bombay, the author goes to the Persian Gulf, Muscat, Hormuz, Bahrain, Nineveh, Babylon, Baghdad, Mosul, Mardin and Istanbul. He describes the life of the Bedouins and the people he meets. P. 61, he gives a description of the Gulf Pirates: The Gulf Pirates consist of different Arab tribes. The main one, the Joasmis of Rass-al-Kymer, being intimately united with that of the Wahabis, an already recognized power, our government felt repugnance in attacking them, and hence the impunity which they abuse. Their fleet is said to consist of sixty large vessels and eight to nine hundred smaller vessels, and carries eighteen to nineteen thousand men on board. ". The author recounts the 1809 British raid led by Captain Wainright against these pirates and the storming of Rass-all-Kymer. Heude mentions p. 77 pearl fishing in Bahrain: As we went up the Persian Gulf, we did not pass any other remarkable island, except perhaps that of Bahrain, famous for pearl fishing, and for some water sources fresh which are found at the bottom of the sea, from where divers often report that they draw at certain depths. The author further gives a broad description of the people of Arabia and their culture: p. 176: The affection that the Arab feels for his children and for his family extends to all the members of his tribe. All the tents, or all the cottages, are open; and, in the midst of a horde of bandits, theft is unknown. If the community of goods cannot exist in their state of society, boundless liberality takes its place, and the hand of the one who possesses is always ready to give to the one who is deprived. » Heude further recounts his remarkable journey through the mountains of Kurdistan. The iconography is made up of 6 contemporary colored plates, representing the inhabitants of the regions visited in traditional costume: Arab Bedouin, dervish of Basra, Jew of Baghdad, Tartar, Turk of Merdyn and Hamoud Beg -Effendi. The large folded map bound in-fine is entitled: Map of Asian Turkey and adjacent countries to be used for the journey of Lieutenant William Heude, from the Persian Gulf to Constantinople. ‎Although William Kentridge is now well known for his films, drawings, and theatre productions, he began his artistic career learning etching at the Johannesburg Art Foundation under Bill Ainslie. He spent two years teaching printmaking at this Foundation and his earliest exhibitions featured his monotypes and etchings such as the Domestic Scenes series. William Kentridge Prints is the first book to focus specifically on Kentridge's formidable print oeuvre, filling a gap in published work on the artist to date. ‎EDITION ORIGINALE en partie autobiographique du premier livre de l'auteur, publié sous pseudonyme dans cette collection populaire proposant dans un même volume deux textes imprimés tête-bêche. Exemplaire signé par Burroughs sur le titre « William Lee Burroughs». >>>>>>>>>>>>>Après des études à Harvard dont il sort diplômé en 1944, Burroughs devient détective et travaille avec la pègre de New York. Il vit dans un appartement partagé avec Jack Kerouac et Joan Vollmer, une jeune femme brillante, passionnée de littérature et de philosophie qu'il épousera en 1946 et avec qui il aura un fils l'année suivante. C'est à cette période que le groupe, rejoint par Neal Cassady - le futur héros de SUR LA ROUTE - fréquente Herbert Huncke, petit délinquant et prostitué occasionnel avec qui Burroughs commence à consommer de l'héroïne puis de la morphine. Le 6 septembre 1951, en voyage à Mexico, Burroughs, ivre, tue sa femme d'une balle en pleine tête. Inculpé pour homicide involontaire, iI est arrêté et passe un court séjour en prison avant d'être relâché. Burroughs entame alors des années d'errance en Europe et en Amérique du sud, et c'est en rentrant du Mexique, entre deux défonces, qu'il écrit JUNKIE, dont le personnage d'Herman empreinte les traits d'Herbert Huncke. Après de nombreux refus, Allan Ginsberg par l'intermédiaire de Carl Solomon qu'il avait rencontré lors d'un séjour à l'hôpital psychiatrique impose le livre à son oncle, A.A. Wyn, propriétaire d'Ace Books. Cet éditeur qui publiait des livres de poche bon marché, romans policiers ou d'aventure, sort JUNKIE en 1953 sous le pseudonyme de William Lee, le nom de jeune fille de la mère de l'auteur. Malgré cette diffusion populaire, loin des cénacles littéraires négligeant les romans de genre, le livre qui décrit les paradis artificiels trash des bas-fonds de Greenwich Village connut un fort tirage, et ne tarda pas à devenir culte. ‎Pamphlet. A contemporary account / bibliography of the tracts and pamphlets published by both sides. Most of these were anonymous, and there are marginalia which name the author in most cases in a contemporary hand. Title, text, errata. The errata has been crossed out, and the corrections listed have been made by hand in the text. Clagett was particularly close friends with his eventual successor at Gray's Inn, William Wake, the future archbishop of Canterbury. Clagett saw through the press Wake's "The present state" while Wake was lying low in Dorchester, leading to its sometimes being erroneously credited to Clagett (including by Wing, who referenced it as C4390). The title leaf is detached and a little grubby. The text shows some light staining in places and has some marginal ink notes, the first few leaves are partially detached at the top, everything else is well bound together. Wake, William (16571737), became Archbishop of Canterbury. He was originally from Blandford Forum in Dorset, and became a convinced Anglican after spending time in France. He wrote many tracts opposing Catholicism. William Clagett (16461688) was an English clergyman and pamphleteer, particularly active during the reign of James II, when he was very anti-catholic. 1-40 pp. Wing C4390.‎

La première inscription de la pièce au registre des Libraires date du 8 octobre 1600. C'est une histoire complexe dont l'action se déroule à Athènes en Grèce et réunit pour mieux les désunir deux couples de jeunes amants : Lysandre et Hermia d'une part, Démétrius et Héléna d'autre part. Hermia veut épouser Lysandre mais son père, Égée, la destine à Démétrius, dont est amoureuse Héléna. Lysandre et Hermia s'enfuient dans la forêt, poursuivis par Démétrius, lui-même poursuivi par Héléna. Pendant ce temps, Obéron, le roi des fées, a ordonné à Puck de verser une potion sur les paupières de sa femme, Titania pour se moquer d'elle. ‎Intéressante réunion de cet autographe de l'ethnologue d'origine anglo-jamaïcaine William Frédéric Edwards (1777-1842), naturalisé français en 1828, et de son éloge mortuaire par Berriat-Saint-Prix. Frère d'Henri Milne Edwards, il s'adresse ici à M. "Sivial", probablement l'important chirurgien français Jean Civiale. ‎
