‎Van Filips van Marnix van Sint Aldegonde tot Lode Craeybeckx en van Jan Van Rijswijck tot Patrick Janssens en Bart De Wever. Het stadhuis aan de Grote Markt kende in de loop van de geschiedenis tal van burgemeesters. Maar het gebouw is een verhaal op zich. Het 450 jaar oude gebouw heeft meer te vertellen dan wat er op 't Schoon Verdiep gebeurt. Deze uitgave vertelt het rijke verhaal van dit bekende monument. Deze 450e verjaardag zal niet onopgemerkt voorbij gaan, al was het maar omdat het Stadhuis het enige gebouw is in Antwerpen op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO dat nog steeds zijn originele functie bekleedt. De Stad Antwerpen viert deze verjaardag een heel jaar lang, van februari 2015 tot februari 2016 met tal van evenementen In 1565 openden de Antwerpenaars fier hun nieuwe stadhuis. Het renaissancepalazzo straalde de grootsheid en autonomie van een wereldstad uit. Kort nadien brandde het stadhuis uit en verloor Antwerpen geleidelijk zijn glansrol. Maar het stadsbestuur ging door met het inrichten van het stadhuis, met beeldhouwwerken van Baurscheit, en schilderijen van Rubens, Metsijs, Francken, Van Veen of De Succa. Tweehonderd jaar later was de stad wat ingedommeld en bleek de indeling van het inmiddels erg verweerde gebouw niet meer bruikbaar. Geldtekort en gebrek aan belangstelling hielden alles bij het oude. Toch gingen naarstige stadsarchitecten meer en meer plannen tekenen. De verbouwingen vanaf de jaren 1860 sloten aan bij de traditie van grootsheid en autonomie: toen werd het eerste verdiep echt het Schoon Verdiep. Opnieuw deed de stad beroep op kunstenaars van het moment zoals Henri Leys en de schilders die verbonden waren aan de Antwerpse Academie van Schone Kunsten. Dit boek neemt de lezer mee in de lange geschiedenis van het stadhuis van Antwerpen. Het boek plaatst het stadhuis in de context van politieke gebeurtenissen en bestuurlijke geschiedenis. De auteurs besteden uitgebreid aandacht aan de architectuur, de bouwgeschiedenis en de rol van de Grote Markt. ‎

‎ Oncologische Heelkunde / Surgical Oncology : 07. Not long ago, the finding of distant metastases was tantamount to incurable disease and only palliative surgery. This paradigm started to erode in the eighties when convincing results were obtained in the management of metastasized germ cell tumors by a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Gradually the idea that cure was possible in at least some patients with metastasized tumors found acceptance and indications for treatment with curative intent were broadened. Whereas twenty years ago surgery for metastases was performed infrequently, nowadays it has become almost a part of daily surgical work in major oncological centres. Nevertheless many questions remain about tumor biology, sensitivity and specificity of imaging techniques, biopsy and surgical approach, selection of patients for combined treatment protocols. The topic seemed appropriate as subject of the Study Day of Surgical Oncology 2001 because it is very likely that discoveries in tumor biology will increase our therapeutic possibil!ities for metastases in the future. This book offers clinical oncologists an introduction to some selected topics of tumor biology where important progress has been made during the last decade. The concept is rather unique because it combines advances in clinical pathology, genetics, molecular oncology and immunology. The first two chapters deal with the genetic and molecular basis of malignant transformation on cellular level: DNA damage, mutations and repair mechanisms, oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. The growth of a tumor cell population depends not only on cell division, but also on deregulation of apoptosis (chapter 3). Most clinical tumors are charcterised by heterogeneity caused by different degrees of differentiation in different cell clones as illustrated for soft tissue tumors in chapter 4. The following chapters explain the multistep process of local tumor progression in gastro-intestinal cancers and malignant melanoma. Cellular and molucular aspects of metastases are dealt with in chapter 7. But host cells react to tumor cells and specific T-cell defined antigens offer a perspective for cancer vaccine development as reviewed in the last chatper. The book is timely because new diagnostic and therapeutic applications based on molecular oncology will reach the clinic at ever increasing pace. ‎

This makes it unique as no other book on this topic is currently available. The subject is treated in a multidisciplinary approach and developed in a logical order from basic knowledge to diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. The actual histologic classification is presented and its modifications illustrated. Several specific chromosomal abnormalities have been discovered recently and already two genes involved in myxoid liposarcoma and lipoma have been identified. The clinical spectrum of these tumors is covered and their radiological diagnosis by CT scan and MRI is well illustrated. A new topographical approach to abdominal liposarcoma is presented. The role of biopsy and the problem of surgical margins at resection is discussed against the general background of sarcoma surgery. Surgical experience with lipomatous tumors localized beneath the muscle fascia on limbs and trunk and in the retroperitoneum is analyzed in detail. The role of adjuvant radiotherapy in the treqtment of liposarcoma is critically examined and a review on prognosis is presented as well as a follow-up scheme for each histologic type. This book contains very valuable information for surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, radiotherapists and scientists with a special interest in soft tissue tumors. ‎
