A handsome copy of this monument of German 19th c. erudition in the field of Sanskrit philology. In the preface the author explains that the first important acquisition ( 205 items, collection of John Murray)) was made by his predecessor Wilken. The main part of the collection was bought from the widow of Sir Robert Chambers ( ca. 800 items) in Oxford with the aid of Wilhelm von Humboldt."
