Wittemberg, Mevius, 1654. 4to. In contemporary full vellum with yapp edges. Title in contemporary hand to spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light soiling and miscolouring to extremities. Upper outer corner of front board with loss of vellum, showing the wooden boards underneath. Internally very nice and clean. (22), 692, (70) pp. + frontispiece.
The rare first edition of Quenstedt’s rather ambitious attempt to account for all theologians throughout the history of the world. We have not been able to trace a single copy in the trade. A second edition was published in 1691. “Johannes Andreas Quenstedt was the Thomas Aquinas, so to speak, of Lutheran Orthodoxy, the last great representative. To anyone following his arrangement of material and noting his exegesis it will become evident that he was fair and meticulous in his work and drew from the best which his precursors had to offer. La planche 98 a été reliée par erreur p. 748. Des planches très légèrement brunies. Exemplaire complet et en très bon état. Provenance : Eloi Béral (étiquette de bibliothèque). Polytechnicien et ingénieur des mines, Eloi Béral (Cahors, 1838-1908) a été inspecteur général des Mines et Sénateur du Lot. /// In-8 de VI, 842 pp., 100 pl., 3 pl. dépliantes en couleurs. This handsome work on Jurassic paleontology is illustrated with 100 lithographic out-of-text plates, 3 color folding plates and 42 engravings in text. Friedrich August von Quenstedt (1809 1889) was professor of mineralogy and geognosy at Tübingen. Five genera were named in his honour. Plate 98 was wrongly bound in front of p. 748. Some plates very slightly browned. A complete copy in very good condition. Provenance : Eloi Béral (library label).
