‎Performing the Middle Ages from 'Beowulf' to 'Othello' traces the dialogic nature of the relationship between the Middle Ages and modernity. Arguing that modern beliefs in the alterity of the Middle Ages stem from the Middle Ages- own processes of self-representation, Johnston explores varieties of nostalgia through a wide selection of texts. This volume spans an extensive chronological period with a view to demonstrating how our notions of the medieval have been crucially informed by the past itself. The study is focused on works which stage that popular literary archetype ' the nostalgic figure of the aristocratic warrior ' and argues that it is this image that provides a structural model for so many modern perspectives on the Middle Ages. And yet, in the Middle Ages this model was being deconstructed as it was also being generated. By moving from the self-consciously archaic heroism of Beowulf to the scathing comment on chivalric narrative presented in Chaucer's 'Knight's Tale', Johnston's analysis offers an intriguing insight into the way medieval texts engage in a continual aesthetic and ideological critique of their own cultural moment. Using Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the Alliterative Morte Arthure as examples of an incisive critique of the cult of subjectivity and of a highly self-conscious desire for tradition, Johnston extends his analysis to the early seventeenth century, and explores the ways in which Shakespeare's Othello brilliantly deconstructs the very concept of 'Renaissance Man'. ‎In George Eliot's last two novels, Middlemarch (1871-72) and Daniel Deronda (1876), she abandons the realism she had explored and articulated so carefully, most famously in Adam Bede, 'a faithful account of men and things', for an unprecedented return to 'cloud-borne angels, [...] prophets, sibyls, and heroic warriors'. This study addresses Eliot's exploitation of Victorian medievalism by considering the way in which she utilizes the discourses of medievalism, both for their potential for subversiveness and their potential for mediation, to affirm that change is possible socially, culturally, and politically, in her modern contemporary world. The various medieval discourses are revealed as interstices within what initially appears to be a continuation of the realism of her earlier novels. They permit political and cultural readings of a different, and often unexpected, kind to the realist bourgeois values of novels like Adam Bede, and to a lesser extent, Felix Holt. La préface indique que 52 exemplaires d'un tirage total de 500 ont été numérotés et signés. Cet exemplaire n'est pas numéroté, mais porte la signature de Johnston. Il s'agit de reproductions des éditions limitées du journal de Lawrence et de son essai critique sur Flecker publiées par Corvinus Press. En 1911, Lawrence a participé à des fouilles archéologiques dans le nord de la Syrie, et il s'agit d'un fac-similé du récit qu'il a fait de cette période. Le journal a été publié par la Corvinus Press en 1937. Son essai sur Flecker a été publié à seulement 30 exemplaires en 1937. ‎First facsimile edition, signed by the editor at the foot of his introduction to Flecker. The preface stated that 52 copies from a total edition of 500 were numbered and signed. This copy is not numbered, but does bear Johnston's signature. These are reproductions of the Corvinus Press's limited issues of Lawrence's diary and of his critical essay about Flecker. During 1911, Lawrence was employed on an Archaeological dig in Northern Syria, and this is a facsimile of his account of this period. The diary was published by the Corvinus Press in 1937. His essay on Flecker was published in an edition of only 30 copies in 1937. "The poet James Elroy Flecker [1884-1915] had been a friend of Lawrence's in Beirut before the war. None of the appearances of this essay have been in trade editions" (O'Brien: A194a, A198b.) Housed in original cream card slipcase. Thirteen plates, illustrations in text in Diary, limitation in red in Flecker. A very nice, clean copy. A couple of light marks to the slipcase. 30cm x 20.5cm. .‎

Johnston retrace l'histoire de la Chine depuis son arrivée en 1898 et décrit ses rapports avec son élève, la vie de la cour mandchoue, les événements, etc. ‎
