"The active ingredient in Vin Mariani was cocaine, extracted from the leaves of Erythroxylon coca, a plant indigenous to Peru. Introduced in 1871 by Mariani (1838-1914) who developed it while working in a Parish pharmacy... He was a master at using testimonials from celebrities, and over the years he published the appreciations of kings, queens, popes, actors, actresses, musicians, writers, clergymen, politicians, and most notably, leaders of the medical profession" (Helfand, p. 129ff).
