The Goupil company , specialised in art reproduction, started publishing photo albums on art subjects from 1850 onwards. These albums contained photographs in the '' carte de visite '' format ( ca. 90 x 50 cm) . The photographs were intended to be mounted by the buyers in their own albums, together with their private photographs and portraits. In 1870 Goupil published a series of 5 albums each devoted to a single painter; Raphael, Delaroche, Gerome, Scheffer and Vernet. Complete albums are rare. Since 1991 there exists a museum in Bordeaux which exhibits and documents the activities of this 19th-century French art publisher."
