This book intends to present an overview of the current state of basic and applied physiology of K Channels, and is the result of a symposium on Potassium Channels in Normal and Pathological Conditions held in Leuven, september 8-9, 1995. In a first section, after an overview on Prof. Carmeliet's work on K currents, a number of distinguished scientists present up-to-date information provided by molecular biology on the structure-function relations of the diversity of cardiac K channels. The regulation of K channels by intra- and extracellular factors is treated next. The following chapters deal with the role of K currents (with emphasis on the ATP-sensitive K channels) for myocardial hypoxia and ischemia. In the last chapters of this section the delayed rectifier and the role of class III antiarrhythmic drugs are discussed. In the second section of the book a number of electrophysiologists describe their latest investigations in the domain of K channel electrophysiology.
