Bruxelles, Charles Muquardt, 1860. Contemporary hcalf. Gilt back. XXIII,319 pp., 7 large folded maps (1 in xerox-copy).
"10. Paris, Tanera, Torino - Bocca , Milano - Dumolard, 1860, in-folio, 38 x 29 cm, (4)nn pp + 12 pp + 7 maps (of which 5 large folding). (Complete). The description mentions a total of 8 maps but this is incorrect as plate 5 and plate 6 are combined - the struggle at Robecchetto and the battle of Magenta. Bound in contemporary red half cloth, with gilt lettering on spine, marbled boards and endpapers, original printed wrapper preserved. Small tear, without loss of paper in the last map, but a fine copy. Informative atlas with large lithographed maps, indicating the positions of the armies in colour. It describes the so-called Second war of Italian Independence or Franco-Austrian War. The last battle of the war , at Solferino, is famous in European history for being also the last battle where the reigning monarchs on either side led their armies; Empereur Napoleon III, Kaizer Franz Joseph I and King Victor Emmanuel II. Henry Dunant, who created the Red Cross in the aftermath of the battle, was an eyewitness."
