Cindy Wright creates large-scale oil paintings on canvas. At first glance the monumental still life paintings appear to be photo-realistic, using the photographic methods of cropping compositions and intense source lighting. Wright?s work echoes the morbid tradition of ?vanitas? from the Dutch Old Masters of the 16th and 17th Century. Between beauty and decay, archetypal symbols like the human scull, rotten fruit, raw flesh, and dead animals traditionally represent the transience of life. Within a contemporary context, these symbols may refer to mass consumption or the exploitation of natural resources. However, this is not essentially the artist?s intent. Rather than being shocking or moralising, the images evoke a sense of peacefulness, silence, and fragility. Wright?s subjects are taken from her immediate surroundings and are transformed into iconic images for our times. This second edition of the catalog is published as a reprint collecting a selection of paintings from the last 20 years up to 2023, and exists alongside the artist?s exhibition part of the INBOX program at MHKA Museum in Antwerp.

Sarajevo to Paris fashion Sarajevo to Paris, fashion or reportage, deciding on the title of a book is mind-boggling. I call myself a documentary photographer that accidentally ended up doing fashion. The end of the '80s was an interesting and intense time in world history, and a particularly creative time in the world of fashion. As a young female photographer I was interested in both worlds. I was travelling for newspapers and magazines to the fashion weeks in Milan and Paris and to the conflict zones of Lebanon and Iraq. It was during the war in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the siege of Sarajevo that I matured in documentary photography, fortunately without being injured. Thirty years later, when looking back, those two worlds ? documentary and fashion ? still define my work. Both are equally represented in my archives. This book, of my fashion work, is the first to be published. I called it Sarajevo to Paris because sometimes I would travel directly from one to the other.
