Contemporary vellum, without stains or browning, good contemporary binding. Nice copy of an emblematical work which went through many editions, well into the 18th century. The first edition (1607) was published in Antwerp by Verdussen. 103 proverbs and quotations from the works of Horatius are each illustrated with a copper engraving. The text is in French, Latin, Italian and Dutch. The Dutch text in the original edition is by Bredero. In our edition this text has been reworked. (Praz pp. 523).
