New edition, with prefatory note by Mrs. Tyndall, of this classical work. Tyndall was professor of natural philosophy at the Royal Institution. With his friend Huxley he went to Switzerland to study the motion of glaciers; his views brought him into conflict with Forbes and James Thomson.T.H. Huxley wrote: “Tyndall took up glacier work in consequence of a conservation at my table, and we went out to Switzerland together”. This was the first season of Tyndall's systematic observations on the ‘Mer de Glace’. The hotel on the Montenvers was too noisy: for the sake of quiet, therefore, I had my bed placed in the château next door, a little octogonal building erected by some kind and sentimental Frenchman, and dedicated ‘à la nature’. This was the pavilion erected by Bourrit in 1795”De Beer, Travellers, p. 269, 274 and Early Travellers p. 172; Bibliographie der Schweizerischen Landeskunde III/87 (first edition 1860).
