De Thou was successively master of requests, chief justice and councillor of state under Henry III, and councillor again under Henry IV. As 'président à mortier', he played an important role in the negotiations which culminated in the Edict of Nantes in 1598. One of the principal sources for the history of France in the sixteenth century, the work was based on French and Italian sources, eye-witness reports and correspondence with foreign authors. Unfinished at the time of his death, it was continued and annotated by N. Rigault and P. Dupuy. "A model of exact research, drawn from the best sources, and presented in a style both elegant and animated." (Encyc. Britannica, 11th Edn.) Goldsmith, BM STC French T372. cf. Brunet V 841. cf. Graesse VII 147-48. Image disp.‎
