Ellen Thorbecke (1902-1973) était une journaliste de presse, écrivain, photographe, et l'épouse de l'ambassadeur des Pays-Bas en Chine. Pendant son séjour en République de Chine, elle a réalisé une série unique de photos de portraits et de scènes de rue dans la campagne chinoise et dans les villes de Pékin, Shanghai et Hong Kong pour illustrer ses articles de presse. Les photos ont été publiées dans des livres dont elle a également écrit les textes. Avec ses reportages originaux et novateurs sur la Chine, Ellen Thorbecke occupe une place unique dans le genre de la photographie ethnographique.
