Au recto figure une dédicace manuscrite à sa seconde femme, Diana Miles, qu'il a épousée en 1970. Leslie Thomas, OBE, était un auteur gallois surtout connu pour son roman comique The Virgin Soldiers. Ce roman se déroule dans le Pacifique Sud, avec de nombreux personnages intéressants - très années 1960 ! Bon exemplaire propre, manifestement lu par la femme et la famille de l'auteur. 284 pages. 200 x 140 mm.‎

Il s'agit d'une édition dévotionnelle de L'Imitation de Jésus-Christ, traduite en français par le jésuite Jean Crasset de Gonnelieu, publiée avec des ajouts pratiques destinés aux laïcs et au clergé dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle. Il s'agit d'une traduction de l'uvre originale, un classique dévotionnel latin médiéval, généralement attribué à Thomas à Kempis. La combinaison du texte de von Kempis, des « pratiques » méthodiques et de l'ordinaire de la messe bilingue en fait un manuel compact de piété catholique, adapté à la fois à l'utilisation en retraite et à la dévotion quotidienne des laïcs dans la France du XVIIIe siècle. This is a devotional edition of L'Imitation de Jésus-Christ, in a Jesuit French translation by Jean Crasset de Gonnelieu, issued with added practical material for lay and clerical use in the first half of the 18th century. This is a translation of the original work, a Medieval Latin devotional classic, generally attributed to Thomas à Kempis. This combination of à Kempis's text, methodical "pratiques", and the bilingual Mass Ordinary made this a compact manual of Catholic piety, suitable both for retreat use and for everyday lay devotion in 18th century France. In full leather binding, with raised bands and gilt decoration to spine. Gilt title has worn away but is faintly visible. Boards are rubbed to corners and front board has a slight bow. Internally, the book is very clean for its age. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC Number: 20539224. Collation. xxxvi, 574 pages. 17 x 10 cm. This is the earliest copy of Gonelieu's version that we have been able to find. .‎

‎Two volumes (both first editions 1872) bound together in a beautiful dark blue full leather binding with gilt decoration to the boards and the spine. The binding is slightly rubbed to the edges, with slight cracking to the bottom edge of the spine. but otherwise in very good condition. The binding is signed "Bound for George Rutland, Newcastle, Upon Tyne" We cannot find a binder of this name, but there was a publisher of (primarily) angling and fishing books based in Newcastle in this period, so it is presumably done for him. Inside, there is light to moderate foxing to many of the pages. Rear end papers have a darkening to the edges. This volume includes both the "Poems illustrated" and the subsequent volume "again illustrated" Pagination: viii, 109, [i]. vii, [i], 180 pp.‎

Une pièce rare. Collection Wellcome 44003i. Smith, John Thomas, (1766-1833). Également connu sous le nom d'Antiquity Smith, était un peintre, graveur et antiquaire anglais. Il fut également conservateur des estampes au British Museum.‎

Wellcome Collection 44003i. Smith, John Thomas, (1766-1833). Also known as Antiquity Smith, was an English painter, engraver and antiquarian. He was also curator of prints at the British Museum. ‎The Departure from "Poetical Sketches of Scarborough"‎

‎London Rudolph Ackermann 1813 Gravure attrayante, coloriée à la main par Rowlandson. Retirée de "Poetical Sketches of Scarborough" (Esquisses poétiques de Scarborough). Cette uvre se composait à l'origine de vingt et une planches gravées à l'eau-forte par Thomas Rowlandson d'après James Green. L'aquatinte a été ajoutée par John Bluck et Joseph Stadler. Les croquis de Green ont été réalisés en tant que souvenirs et n'étaient pas destinés à la publication, mais ils ont finalement été publiés en raison de la demande populaire. Les couleurs sont belles et nettes, ce qui en fait un exemplaire attrayant. La feuille présente un léger assombrissement de la zone vierge, ainsi qu'une tache de colle et une entaille sur le bord inférieur, là où elle a été retirée du livre original. La gravure mesure 11 cm x 18 cm. La feuille mesure 14,5 cm x 24 cm.‎

‎An attractive, hand coloured engraving by Rowlandson. Removed from "Poetical Sketches of Scarborough." This work originally consisted of twenty-one plates etched by Thomas Rowlandson after James Green. The aquatint was added by John Bluck and Joseph Stadler. The sketches by Green were made as souvenirs and not intended for publication, but were ultimately published due to popular demand. Nice clean colouring making an attractive copy. Sheet has a little darkening to the blank area, and has glue stain and nicking to the bottom edge where removed from the original book. engraving is 11cm x 18cm. sheet is 14.5cm x 24cm. First Edition. .‎

‎Hardback, covered in marbled paper covers with leather label to the spine. The preface is dated March 1796, and the pagination conforms to the first edition, but the date to the title page has been very neatly cut out. We are a little confused by this copy. The pagination is correct, and every page number is present as it should be - but there are 14 engraved head pieces by Thomas Stothard, and 8 engraved tail pieces (not 14 as other 1st edition copies mention). The is also no full page engraving. So this may be a second edition without engraving? The label is darkened, and the edge of the spine a little chipped, exposing the paper beneath. Still attractive though. A few light foxing spots, but the engravings are good clean impressions. The first section is of 'Elfin Eclogues', featuring characters from A Midsummer Night's Dream, with the remainder of the volume containing odes on various subjects, including: 'Music', 'Morning', 'Evening', 'the Glow-Worm', 'Love' and 'Youth'. vii, [1], 112 pp. 175 x 100 mm (7 x 4 inches).‎

‎A decent copy of this First edition. Old (probably not contemporary) full leather boards, with gilt titles. This copy contains a folding plan of the Abbey, and a folding view of the East Prospect of the Abbey (both clean and tidy). There is also a folding map of the Liberty of Furness. This is somewhat creased and has a few small closed tears to it, and a couple of foxing spots. No loss though. Although anonymous, the dedication is signed Thomas West. The leather is somewhat rubbed, with a little loss to the head and tail of the spine - not much though. Internally mainly clean and tidy, with a touch of foxing and a few spots only.
