‎Le très rare atlas céleste de Corbinianus Thomas qui comporte un traité d’astronomie et une explication sur l’usage des globes en astronomie. Leipzig & Nuremberg, 1730. Petit in-4 oblong de (1) f. de titre, 212 pp. et 83 planches hors texte. Manquent probablement le frontispice gravé et/ou un table dép. Feuillet de titre monté avec manque de papier et d’un peu de texte dans la partie supérieure. Cachet sur le feuillet de titre et dans la marge. Qq. ff. abîmés dans les marges. Qq. Tâches et mouillures. 20 planches avec dessins ajoutés dans l’image à l’encre ou au crayon. Demi-vélin souple postérieur à coins, plats de papier cartonné bleu, titre au dos. 195 x 156 mm.‎

‎Le très rare atlas céleste de Corbinianus Thomas qui comporte un traité d’astronomie et une explication sur l’usage des globes en astronomie. Poggend. II, 1096 u. ; Honeyman 2975; Not in Houzeau/L. Une autre version de cet ouvrage parut simultanément sous le titre de Mercurii Philosophici firmamentum firmianum descriptionem et usum globi artificialis coelestis. On connaît peu de choses à propos de Corbinianus Thomas, moine bénédictin et professeur de mathématique à Salzbourg, mais son atlas fait partie des trésors méconnus de la cartographie céleste. Il est composé de gravures représentant individuellement les constellations, aussi charmantes les unes que les autres. La planche d’Andromède est la plus réussie, grâce à son drap baroque répondant aux différentes teintes du rocher composant le décor. Certaines autres figures des constellations sont aussi peu communes. Thomas fut l’un des premiers cartographes célèstes à dédier une planche séparée à Camelopardalis, une constellation qui apparut pour la première fois sur les globes vers 1600, mais qui habituellement apparaissait aux côtés de Cepheus ou Cassiopeia. Il fut également le premier cartographe à offrir une planche individuelle à certaines des constellations du ud, tells que Indus et Pavo qui étaient habituellement représentées en tant que petites parties des planches dédiées au planisphère centré sur le pole sud célèste. Comme on peut le voir sur la planche d’Andromède à droite, Thomas a utilize un système de nomenclature intéressant : les lettres grecques de Bayer, la numération romaine pour la magnitude, et la numération arabe en référence à un catalogue d’étoiles. Ce système provient des larges globes de Coronelli, tout comme de nombreuses figures de Thomas. Thomas inventa une constellation, la constellation de Corona Firminia en honneur à son mécène, l’archevêque de Salzbourg. Elle ne figure ainsi que dans l’atlas du moine bénédictin Thomas Corbinianus où elle remplace tout bonnement la Couronne boréale. Le présent ouvrage est illustré de 83 gravures sur cuivre à pleine page présentant les constellations, les hémisphères, ou des figures plus techniques consacrées à l’usage des globes en astronomie. Précieux exemplaire de ce rare atlas céleste, dont l’ensemble des 83 planches a été entièrement colorié à la main à l’époque dans des tons particulièrement vifs. Nos recherches ne nous ont permis de localiser que 2 exemplaires de ce très rare atlas céleste dans l’ensemble des Institutions mondiales : Bibliothèque d’Etat de Berlin et Bibliothèque de l’Université d’Eichstätt.‎

‎Première édition citée par Brunet des Œuvres en latin de Thomas More, parue simultanément en 1565 et 1566 chez deux éditeurs différents Bogardus et Zangrius. Adams m 1751; Belgica Typographica 4525; Gibson (More) 76a. Elle présente en édition originale Historia Regis Richard Tertii qui n’avait pas encore été publiée. Contrairement à ce qu’annonce Brunet (III, 1892) cette édition contient bien l’Utopie, les Epigrammata, les Ecrits contre Luther et l'Expositio Passionis Domini. Cette édition complète l'édition des œuvres en anglais parue 9 ans plus tôt à Londres. Il faudra attendre l'édition de Francfort de 1689 pour trouver une édition aussi complète. Cette édition constitue la plus importante collection des Œuvres latines de Thomas More du XVIe siècle. Imprimée en caractères italiques pour les Epigrammata et en caractères romains pour les autres textes, elle est ornée d'une vignette de titre et de nombreuses initiales historiées. Grand ami d'Erasme, érudit, philanthrope, Thomas More participa pleinement au renouveau de la pensée qui caractérise pleinement l'époque de la Renaissance ainsi qu'à l'humanisme dont il fut le plus illustre représentant anglais. « Le supplice de Morus fut un sujet d'universels regrets pour ceux mêmes qui avaient été en opposition avec l’ancien ministre tant il y avait en ce grand homme de bienveillance et de bonté». Erasme. Très séduisant exemplaire de parfaite fraîcheur conservé dans son beau vélin de l’époque. Il porte un commentaire manuscrit d'un érudit de l'époque à l'encre sur la page de garde.‎

‎Summary Thomas Gallus (d. 1246) was the Abbot of Vercelli in the north of Italy. Initially a canon regular in the abbey of St Victor in Paris, he helped found a new monastery and church in the home town of his patron, Cardinal Guala Bicchieri. As well as commenting on the Canticle of Canticles three times, Thomas was renowned for his expositions of the works of Dionysius the Areopagite, commentaries which earned him the title magister in hierarchia (master of the hierarchies). This volume contains the first translation in any language of his Glosses on the Angelic (or Celestial) Hierarchy (completed in 1224), as well as his more detailed Explanation of the Angelic Hierarchy (finished in 1243). The commentaries are fascinating for their insights into Thomas's teaching that love has a higher access to an experience of God than the intellect, the role of the angelic hierarchies in the mystical return of the soul, the psychological interpretation of the angels as representing faculties of the soul, and the use of symbols representing analogical features of the divine. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis as Thomas Gallus, Super angelica ierarchia (CCCM, 223) and Glose super angelica ierarchia (CC CM, 223A). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation. The century of Peter Paul Rubens would never have been the same without the support of Albert and Isabella. In the Habsburg Netherlands, a region split by civil war, the protestant Northern Provinces had broken away from Catholic Spain, while Spanish rule was established in the Southern Netherlands. The confidence between sovereign and subject would be restored by the Archdukes. The Twelve Year Truce (1609-1621) brought the necessary peace for a political, economic and in particular cultural revival. Albert and Isabella surrounded themselves with a score of artists, including the architects Wenzel Coebergher and Jacques Franckaert, the composer Peter Philips and the court painters, Peter Paul Rubens in the first place, but also Jan I Brueghel, Otto Van Veen and Theodoor van Loon. C'est à Paris que Thomas d'Aquin tint les douze questions quodlibétiques, Il y aborde des questions variées: la vision béatifique, la nature humaine du Christ, la condition des corps ressucités, les éléments constitutifs du mariage, les effets du sacrements ou encore les rapports entre les clercs et les ordres mendiants. Le second ouvrage est du au plus grand théologien catholique de la Renaissance (Universalis). Il entra chez les dominicains à Naples en 1484, dasn le même couvent oû furent admis avant lui Thomas d'Aquin et après lui, Giordano Bruno. Il a tenté (sans succès) de ramener Martin Luther à la foi catholique. Célèbre pour ses commentaires philosophiques, son commentaire à la Summa theologica de Thomas d'Aquin, ainsi que pour ses écrits de controverses anti-luthérienne. ‎

L'édition latine fut souvent réimprimée, accompagnée d'annotations et commentaires explicatifs. L'ouvrage, dans sa version latine, fut mis à l'index des livres interdits par décret du 18 mars 1645. Le traducteur français, Nicolas Lefèvre (ou Le Febvre), né vers 1610, professeur de chimie au Jardin des Plantes de Paris, suit la version latine du texte. Cette traduction date de son séjour en Angleterre lorsqu'il fut appelé par Charles II, qui lui confia en 1664 la direction de la pharmacie du palais Saint James. Membre de la Société royale de Londres, Lefèvre meurt en 1674. La formulation générale du titre, "la religion du médecin", ne témoigne pas du contenu du livre. Il s'agit d'une oeuvre toute personnelle, où, d'une part, Browne, se défend contres les accusations pour athéisme et développe son approche singulière du fait religieux ; et où, d'autre part, il égrène ses avis sur de nombreux sujets du temps. "La religion du médecin aurait tout aussi bien pu s'intituler, au dire de Bayle, Le médecin de la religion. Thomas Browne affirme sa foi chrétienne, mais ne veut dépendre d'aucune église". Ainsi, en 55 chapitres courts, dans un style alliant préceptes et paradoxes, moral et ironie, Browne étudie, tout en s'y impliquant et en affirmant son opinion, les fondements de la religion et de la morale, la magie, les esprits, les démons, les apparitions, les songes, la pierre philosophale, les pauvres, le mariage, la musique, etc. Browne pratiqua la médecine à Norwich . ‎Summary While they often go hand-in-hand and the distinction between the two is frequently blurred, authority and power are distinct concepts and abilities - this was a problem that the Church tussled with throughout the High and Late Middle Ages. Claims of authority, efforts to have that authority recognized, and the struggle to transform it into more tangible forms of power were defining factors of the medieval Church's existence. As the studies assembled here demonstrate, claims to authority by members of the Church were often in inverse proportion to their actual power - a problematic paradox which resulted from the uneven and uncertain acceptance of ecclesiastical authority by lay powers and, indeed, fellow members of the ecclesia. The chapters of this book reveal how clerical claims to authority and power were frequently debated, refined, opposed, and resisted in their expression and implementation. The clergy had to negotiate a complex landscape of overlapping and competing claims in pursuit of their rights. They waged these struggles in arenas that ranged from papal, royal, and imperial curiae, through monastic houses, law courts and parliaments, urban religious communities and devotional networks, to contact and conflict with the laity on the ground; the weapons deployed included art, manuscripts, dress, letters, petitions, treatises, legal claims, legates, and the physical arms of allied lay powers. ‎Summary Ancient commentaries on poetry - due to their heteronomous nature, their miscellaneous character, and the fact that most of them are transmitted in abridged and anonymous form - are usually not considered 'authorial' texts in the same way as poems or literary prose are. Nevertheless, as didactic texts, they rely on authority to convey their interpretation, and they also often seem to have been perceived as products of authorial activity, as paratexts, references and pseudepigraphic attributions demonstrate. The aim of this volume is to explore this tension and to examine commentaries and scholia on poetry in terms of authorship and 'authoriality'. The contributions use several Latin and Greek corpora as case studies to shed light on how these texts were read, how they display authorial activity themselves, and how they fulfil their function as didactic works. They provide reflections on the relationship of author, authorship, and authority in 'authorless' traditions, explore how authorial figures and authorial viewpoints emerge in an implicit manner in spite of the stratified nature of commentaries, investigate the authorial roles adopted by commentators, compilers and scribes, and elucidate how commentators came to be perceived as authors in other exegetic traditions. Huxley s'emploie ici à "montrer comment l'étude attentive de l'un des animaux les plus communs et les plus insignifiants nous conduit pas à pas des notions les plus vulgaires aux généralisations les plus larges, aux problèmes les plus difficiles de la zoologie et même de la science biologique en général" (p. IX). L'ouvrage fait suite à un article que Huxley avait envoyé à Henri de Lacaze-Duthiers, traduit par le biologiste Patrick Geddes et publié dans les Archives de zoologie expérimentale et générale (1879). Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), "naturaliste emblématique de la science victorienne" (Geslot) est relativement peu connu du grand public français. Il joua pourtant un rôle essentiel dans la défense et la diffusion de la théorie de l'évolution, ce qui lui valut le surnom de "bouledogue de Darwin". Ses textes ont été diffusés en France par Émile Alglave, directeur de la Bibliothèque scientifique internationale et de la Revue des cours scientifiques (Revue Rose).
