Moons gebruikt de hedendaagse media om hen op een elegante manier te ondermijnen. In die zin koppelt hij esthetiek aan subversiviteit. Zoals de surrealisten al wisten: schoonheid kan scherp zijn. With In Questa Tomba Oscura - The Skull within (pixelation as strategy of [dis]appearance), Spank Moons draws connections between current fetish notions, as digital information and mobile communication, and age-old themes, as eros and thanatos. This way, he creates a contemporary, postmodern version of the 17th-century vanitas motif. This accounts for a certain amount of courage. The ephemeral aspect of beauty and wealth, the fleetingness of human desires and lusts, is a theme at odd with the message of the majority of contemporary media.
