.: Saint-Dié des Vosges, after 1855, miniature on vellum, vellum size 485 x 370 mm, miniature size 460 x 275 mm. The miniature is vertically divided in three parts. The outer parts are elaborate flower border heightened with gold. The central part , consisting of a gothic lace work is horizontally divided in three parts. The upper part represents our Lord with two angels. The central part is a text in Spanish '' Testo - Vivo sin vivir en mi , y de tal manera espero , que muero porque no muero . Glosa Aquesta divina union del amor....''. The lower part figures Saint Teresa. Saint Teresa of Avila (1515 - 1582 ) was a prominent Spanish mystic and also a reformer of the Carmelite Order. Her initiatives led eventuelly to the establishment of the Discalced Carmelites. Her literary works are highly regarded and her poem '' Vivo sin vivir en mi'' which is reproduced on the miniature is very widely known in the Spanish speaking world. The artist Emilie Sivel has signed this miniature '' Médaille - 1855 / Emilie Sivel St. Dié des Vosges /'' . She belonged probably to the Carmelite convent of Saint Dié. At the first Paris world exhibition of 1855 she was awarded a medal for her work ( '' a Gloria in Excelsis with gothic calligraphy ? ''). At the Exhibition of 1867 she received a honorable mention. Very fine and large important example of a 19th c. miniature, signed by the artist. These refined examples of the revival of Western Illuminated Art, here in perfect condition, appear rarely on the market.
