‎Das 15. Jahrhundert gilt traditionell als eine Zeit, in der das Verhaltnis von Text und Vertonung in der geistlichen Musik als schwer bestimmbar oder uberhaupt als unbestimmt gilt. Die vermeintliche Ungenauigkeit der Textunterlegung in den Quellen sowie das generelle Schweigen der zeitgenossischen Musiktheorie zum Thema haben dazu gefuhrt, dass feste 'Regeln' oder auch nur Anhaltspunkte zur musikalischen Deklamation lateinischer Texte bisher nicht erarbeitet werden konnten. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein Ansatz vorgestellt, der dieses Problem weitgehend lost. Zunachst lasst sich anhand der musikalischen Faktur weitgehend zwischen 'deklamatorischen' und 'nicht deklamatorischen' Passagen in der Vertonung differenzieren. Die' deklamatorischen Passagen' (die in der Regel auch in den Quellen am prazisesten textiert sind) sind ihrerseits in einer Art und Weise rhythmisiert, die sehr eng mit dem Texttyp der Vorlage (Prosa/rhythmische Prosa/rhythmische Dichtung/silbenzahlende Dichtung/metrisch-quantitierende Dichtung) korreliert. Am deutlichsten lasst sich in der einfachen Mehrstimmigkeit zeigen (Lauden, Cantiones, Psalmrezitation), dass mit jedem Texttyp bestimmte musikalisch-rhythmische Modelle korrelieren; diese Modelle, die zum Teil erheblich von dem abweichen, was gemeinhin als 'gute' Textdeklamation gilt, konnen aber auch auf die komplexesten Motetten der Zeit ubertragen werden. Die Modelle sind zudem uber den gesamten Untersuchungszeitraum und daruber hinaus konstant; die angeblich zunehmende Berucksichtigung des 'korrekten' Prosaakzentes in der Motette ab dem fruhen 16. Jahrhundert ist somit nicht das Resultat eines humanistisch motivierten 'besseren' Textbewusstseins, sondern das Resultat einer Verschiebung in der Textauswahl, weg von rhythmisch-metrischen Vorlagen und hin zu Prosavorlagen. Thomas Schmidt-Beste, geb. 1968 in Konstanz, studierte Musikwissenschaft, Geschichte und Italianistik in Heidelberg und Chapel Hill (USA). 1995 Promotion in Heidelberg mit einer Arbeit zur Musikasthetik Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys. 1995-2002 wissenschaftlicher Angestellter am Forschungsprojekt 'Cappella Sistina' der Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften; 1998-99 Stipendiat der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung in Urbana (USA). 2001 Habilitation in Heidelberg und Ernennung zum Privatdozent; seit 2002 Heisenberg-Stipendiat der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft. ‎In an article published in 1979, Ludwig Finscher defined imitation and text treatment as the main parameters of the stylistic shift he detected in motet composition around 1500, and Josquin Desprez as the composer whose works embodied them most clearly. This volume of twenty-five essays by leading Renaissance musicologists ? based on a conference which took place in Bangor (Wales) in 2007 ? takes stock of developments in motet research in the intervening three decades. It does focus considerable attention on text treatment and compositional technique (texture and cantus firmus manipulation as much as imitation in the strict sense), but also on questions such as regional repertoires (such as Bohemia and Spain), manuscripts (such as the ?Medici Codex?), and semantic aspects (devotion, symbolism etc.). Josquin?s oeuvre, while still the focus of several essays, is contextualized through studies on composers as diverse as Regis, Busnoys, Obrecht, Fevin, Moulu, Gascongne, Gaffurio, Martini, and Senfl. Although there are still many questions to be answered about the motet around 1500 ? a period which, according to Joshua Rifkin, is like a ?black hole? for the genre given the lack of extant works, ascriptions, and stylistic consistency ? the volume is an important step forward in exploring and understanding this crucial repertoire.‎
