En juin 1802, Edward Stanley (autrefois Evêque de Norwich) entreprit le premier de ces voyages à l’étranger qui, tout au long de sa vie, demeurèrent sa forme favorite de loisirs. Il visite Rouen, Paris, Lyon alors que la France sort de la Révolution, continue en Espagne par Malaga et Gibraltar. En juin 1814, il se précipite à Paris et assiste à la Première Restauration. Fin 1815, il effectue un dernier voyage sur le continent et suit les traces de Napoléon de Paris à Waterloo. Enrichies de mille anecdotes et rencontres savoureuses, les lettres d’Edward Stanley donnent un aperçu teinté d’ironie sur la société française à deux moments clefs de son histoire. Admirateur de l’Empereur, Edward Stanley sait aussi croquer sur le vif les officiers français désenchantés, les alliés prétentieux et le petit peuple dans leur quotidien. Son témoignage inédit apporte un éclairage humain sur les épisodes tragiques du début du XIXe siècle.

L’œuvre de Man Ray The Father of Mona Lisa est justifiée sur 100 exemplaires.
