‎The Rubbish Carter ‎

‎Original caricature from 1829, commenting on the resignation of Eldon as Lord Chancellor following the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act in 1829. Eldon had held up the business of the House by putting amendments to many pieces of legislation, shown here falling from his rubbish cart. 23.5cm x 33cm. Original hand colouring is still clean and bright. Small closed tear to the bottom edge of the sheet. John Phillips (1808-1847) was a British caricature artist and satirist. His work was used in the first issue of Punch. After 1830, he focussed more on miniature portraits and paintings that were more artistic than caricature. .‎
