This retrospective exhibition at the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, previously held at the Hugh Lane Municipal Art Gallery, Dublin, brings together works from Scott's extensive and prolific career. Scott's formal training as an architect remains a reference in all his work from his early representational works, in the 1940's and 1950's, of still lifes and landscapes through to his seminal works from the late 1960's represented by the extensive Gold paintings series. The exhibition also reflects Scott's exploration of a diverse range of art forms including tapestries, screens and Tables for Meditation. Born in Kilbrittan, Co. Cork in 1921, Patrick Scott exhibited in the first Irish Exhibition of Living Artists in 1941 and qualified as an architect in 1945. Working for leading Irish Architect Michael Scott for fifteen years Scott devoted himself fully to art in 1960. By which time he had already established a considerable reputation representing Ireland at the Guggenheim International both in 1958 and 1960 and the XXX Venice Biennale. This exhibition is a celebration of Patrick Scott's national and international career and is accompanied by a colour illustrated catalogue with essays commissioned specifically for the exhibition. C'est également sur son modèle que se fondera Honoré de Balzac, qui a rendu hommage à Walter Scott dans l'avant-propos de la Comédie humaine. Le jeune auteur, entré en littérature en écrivant des romans de commande « à la Walter Scott », aboutira avec Les Chouans, qui marquent un tournant décisif de son œuvre, à ce talent de conteur qui, selon la définition de Victor Hugo dans la préface de Cromwell, rend vivante la réalité de l'époque qu'il décrit. En France, son œuvre a créé la vogue des romans historiques dans les années 1820-30, et tous les grands romanciers de la première moitié du XIXe siècle lui ont rendu hommage, se définissant par rapport à lui soit pour l'imiter, comme Balzac et Hugo, soit pour s'en distinguer, comme Stendhal. Chaque tome possède un titre gravé accompagné dune vignette et dau moins deux gravures sur acier par uvre ; les scènes animées sont dues à Tony Johannot, les vues reprenant pour leur part des gravures anglaises. Portrait de Walter Scott en frontispice, gravé par Hopwood. Lensemble est complété de 28 cartes dépliantes rehaussées de couleurs, dressées par le géographe A.-M. Perrot et gravées par Pierre Tardieu, dont une grande carte de lÉcosse placée à la fin de lHistoire dÉcosse. Reliures uniformes en demi-chagrin bleu marine, légèrement postérieures, vers 1850.
