The Kunsthal in Rotterdam proudly hosted Arne Quinze's first exhibition in the Netherlands: My Secret Garden. His first large-scale indoor project consisted of a wooden labyrinth that pushed the visitors towards participation, stimulating them to reflect on their inner selves. Light and music intensified the experience. The electronic music duo Vive la Fete produced specific tones and soundscapes for the exhibition. Simultaneously, in the Belgian coastal town Ostend, his permanent installation Rock Strangers was put into place. A sentiment of estrangement is generated by the monumental sculptures, due to their size and electric orange color, while they also evoke curiosity and astonishment. This installation intends to stimulate openness and bring different views and groups in society to the forefront. Quinze invited author Saskia de Coster for a unique project. In an encounter between two artists, de Coster immersed herself in Quinze's work. She created a totally new work of fiction--which is included in the books--as well as a documentary for each project. The aim was multidirectional: not only to use Quinze's work as a door to cover new artistic territories, but also to let the new words and images influence and bring to life the spatial installations. The documentaries, which are also included in the boxed book set, include various in-depth interviews and fascinating images of the making of these bold endeavors. The viewer gets a front-row look at the working process of both artists and will gain an intense experience of the works of art themselves.

Many projects serve as licenses for adventurous travels and rambles through the most desolate of places in extreme circumstances. Mich le Matyn (b. 1978) uses her camera in a very intense and personal experience of the landscape, and in a fashion highly contrasting to the usual documentary approach of distance and objectivity. Her sensitivity for nature is stimulated by a research in age-old folk tales en customs, anthropological myths and sagas, but also popular comics and films about the narrow, supposed boundaries between man and animal, between human and demon. These animistic thoughts, folktales, and charged places are triggers for Mich le Matyn's travels. She uses traveling as an atelier. The way of dealing with her surroundings can be read as 'participative observation'. It connects Matyn's photography to her performances. "To become a beast To wander loose To buy a leash To seek a tamer To get stuck on thoughts To get caught To go feral To breed mistakes To seek a tamer To speak to no one To seek a tamer To withold no one To seek a tamer To leave no stone unturned To seek a tamer To ignore every opposition For centuries the master For centuries the beast" From: 'Arrows of Thought' Saskia De Coster

Artist Arne Quinze's installation, My Secret Garden, encourages visitors to explore their own mental place where they keep their most personal thoughts, memories, desires and secrets. My Secret Garden is complementary to his other work, Rock Strangers, on the coastline in Ostend, which is a public confrontation with alienation in the centre of the city. Quinze invited Belgian author Saskia de Coster to capture the alienation which the Rock Strangers exude, as well as the intimacy of My Secret Garden (exhibited at Kunsthal Rotterdam) in contemporary stories and distinctive film footage as the projects were running at the same time. The documentaries are explorations of both projects, through interviews about Quinze's work, unique footage of the making of the installations and 'uncanny' performances. The outcome is a quest for the traces of these works in each and every one of us. The complete box contains two book publications and two documentaries (DVDs) in four languages: Dutch, French, English and German.
