The modern and contemporary furnishing industry of Italy represents a unique paradigm, on account of its industrial design production created by the most important international architects and designers of the 20th and 21st centuries. While reams have been written about Italian architects and designers, until now no volume has ever been dedicated to those who contributed to the success of these designers. "Backstage" takes a behind-the-scenes look at the entrepreneurs who deftly invented the most important phenomenon of modern and contemporary furnishing: those who risked and invested in innovative products that have became icons of design, and those who believed in a new form of elegance. In a detailed historical analysis from the fifties to today, Stefano Casciani follows the career paths of the movers and shakers of the design world. The protagonists are also depicted in striking black-and-white portraits by the Norwegian photographer Tom Sandberg. These portraits of entrepreneurs such as Bruno Danese, Giulio Cappellini and Patrizia Moroso, tell of the individual and collective experience of constructing the image of Italian design worldwide. From the Luisa chair by Poggi to the Thinking Man's chair by Cappellini, from the Tizio lamp by Artemide to the Glo-ball by Flos, the text discusses the past and present of the various entrepreneurial histories and the development of the culture of Italian design. Finally, bio-bibliographical apparatuses complete the volume and enhance its usefulness as a reference book on design. New book.

First publication of Sandberg's first paper on the properties of solutions of nonlinear functional equations in physical systems.""With a few exceptions, however, the users of linear theory, when faced with the presence of a nonlinear element, were forced either to fall back on the classical technique of analyzing the stability of system only under small perturbations, or else to treat the nonlinearity itself as a small perturbation. In a SEMINAL SEQUENCE OF PAPERS beginning in 1963 [the present paper being the first publication], I. W. Sandberg at Bell Labs set forth a full analysis, not limited to small perturbations, of the stability of feedback systems containing nonlinear elements of a precisely specified kind."" (Millman, S. A History of Engineering & Science in the Bell System, 1984, p. 31).

2. Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum , J.M. Meulenhoff, 1961, in-4°, ca. 350 nn pp, colour and black/white illustrations. The woodcut ills. printed on coarse grey coloured paper. Publisher's cloth with printed dustwrapper (wrapper with some small imperfections). Nice copy of this epoch-making publication on Art at the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum. The typography is from W. Sandberg. Allthough the book has a pleasent look it is not free from some irritating typographical novelties which earned this new style the epitaph '' New Ugliness'' ( nieuwe lelijkheid in Dutch). The use of the upper case and page numbering has been alltogether discarded. Text in Dutch. Boek in het Nederlands.
