‎Since the work of Paul Monceaux at the beginning of the 20th century the African hagiographic corpus has evolved. New texts were discovered while others were excluded from the corpus. Thus a new thorough study of the North African hagiography has been highly desired. The present work offers an analysis of a reshaped corpus, composed of thirty acts and passions, which describe the martyrdom of Christians between the 2nd and the late 5th century. The first part of the book examines connections between hagiography and the North African local history, namely the way authors place the facts in the historical and geographical context. The second part focuses on the construction of a hagiographical discourse through the study of the terminology of the martyrdom, the virtues and heroization of persecuted Christians. The third part explores literary personalities of the hagiographers, analysing the use of biblical, classical and patristic sources in the texts. The book provides a contribution to the political and cultural history of North Africa in Late Antiquity. Depuis les travaux de Paul Monceaux, au debut du XXe siecle, le corpus hagiographique africain a evolue : il s'est enrichi de la decouverte de nouveaux textes, alors que d'autres documents ont du etre ecartes. Une nouvelle synthese complete sur cette litterature etait necessaire, et c'est donc un corpus mieux circonscrit, compose de trente actes et passions racontant le martyre de chretiens entre le IIe et la fin du Ve siecle, qui est analyse dans cet ouvrage. Dans une premiere partie sont explorees les relations entre l'hagiographie et l'histoire des provinces africaines, c'est-a-dire la maniere dont les auteurs inscrivent les faits dans un cadre historique et geographique. La deuxieme partie se concentre sur la construction du discours hagiographique par une etude de la terminologie du martyre, des vertus et de l'heroisation des chretiens persecutes. L'etude s'attache enfin a mettre en evidence la personnalite litteraire des hagiographes, par une etude des sources bibliques, « classiques » et patristiques utilisees dans les textes. En definitive, cet ouvrage apporte une contribution a l'histoire politique et culturelle de l'Afrique du Nord tardo-antique.‎
